1. Now you fellows can handle this any way you want.
“This”refers to the deliberation of the jurors.
Noticethe difference between “any way” and “anyway”.
-He maynot like to see me, but I’m going anyway.
-Youcan do it any way you want. I don’t care. I just want the result.
-He isdesperate. He has to find that money any way.
2.Now weknow where we are.
Now weknow what everybody’s attitude is.
3. What do you think that trialcost?
Accordingto the U.S. law any citizen has a right to a proper trial, and if he can’t pay,the trial will be paid by the government. That’s why No. 10 here reminds No. 8angrily that the boy has cost a lot of public money.
4. Since when is dishonesty agroup characteristic?
I’m surprised to hear you say that as ifdishonesty has ever been a group characteristic. This is a retort to No. 10’s remark from No. 9 who is opposed tostereotyped opinions about the poor people. Some individuals are dishonest. They might be rich or poor. It has nothing to do with the social group theybelong to. To condemn a whole group of people as immoral or inferior is thecommon attitude of racists and other bigots.
5. It’s hard to put into words.I just think he’s guilty. I mean nobody proved otherwise.
It’shard to express my views. I just think he’s guilty. I mean nobody proved himinnocent. No. 2 obviously doesn’t know the principle that the boy is innocentuntil proven guilty. His use of the word “think” show that he is not basing hisjudgment on facts but his feelings.
2. Innocent until proven guilty. The burden of proof is on theprosecution.
Theaccused is not guilty unless we prove him guilty. And it is the prosecutor’sresponsibility to present the evidence.
TheAmerican legal system is based on the confrontation principle with theprosecutor trying his utmost to prove the accused guilty and the defense lawyertrying his best to prove his client not guilty. When all the facts are out, then the jury makes a decision.
7. But supposing he really didhear this phrase, how many time have all of you used it?
Even ifhe did hear this phrase, we all have used it so many times but we don’t meanit.
8. And from what was presentedat the trial, the boy looks guilty on the surface.
Apparently,it seems that the boy is guilty based on the evidence at the trial.
9. … why did he leave it therein the first place?
… whydid the boy leave the knife at the scene at the very beginning?
10. I think there’s enoughdoubt that we can wonder if he was there at all during the time the killingtook place.
There isenough evidence so that we can doubt that the boy was there at the scene.
11. I’ve seen all kinds ofdishonesty in my day, but this little display takes the cake.
I’veseen all kinds of cheating, lying and other dirty tricks in my life, but thislittle demonstration is the worst I can imagine.
