B&R and Intercultural Communication
The
world today is undergoing a myriad of profound changes, among which,
the rise of China is one of the most influential and far-reaching. This
condition brings to the world many opportunities as well as challenges.
While most countries welcome the incentives China brings to the world,
some others are concerned about the presumed troubles a powerful China
may present. These worries arise from some misunderstandings about China
as well as misinterpretations of China’s practices in the international
community.
In this Module, we take BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) as an example to present the challenges as well as the opportunities China is facing now. As China’s international standing and influence, say the B&R, continue to command greater attention from the international community, more and more countries are actively seeking to enhance ties with China. However, prejudice, misunderstanding, and suspicion are still commonplace in international perceptions of China. You will be presented with some Westerners’ misunderstandings of China and its causes. Some suggestions, like telling China's story well and developing China's public diplomacy, for how diverse civilizations may coexist will be offered, as well.
