Nonverbal Communication
Chronemics
Chronemics is the study of how we use time in communication. There are two ways to study the concept of time. First, as indicated in 3.3 Kluckhohn & Strodbeck's Cultural Model, we can look at time in the past, the present, and the future. Second, we can classify it into monochronic time and polychronic time. Monochronic time means paying attention to one thing at a time while polychronic time means being involved with many things at once.
Attitudes toward time differ from culture to culture, as each culture has its spoken language, and each also has its own language of time. To function effectively in different countries, it is essential to acquaint yourself with the local language of time, otherwise you will fail to read the hidden messages in the foreign time system and thereby deny yourself vital cultural feedback.
Here is the story: Do One or More at a Time
A Chinese scholar did his research in a joint venture company in Shanghai and he would talk with the General Manager for some information, so he made anappointment with the Chinese General Manager in his office at 2 PM. As scheduled, he got to the General Manager’s office and discussed something with him. When they talked with each other for a while, a phone rang. So he went over to his desk, picked up the phone and talked over the phone for a while. After that, they continued talking. Then there was a knock on the door, because someone came to him for his signature. At 3 his secretary told him that he had another appointment with someone who had waited outside. Very soon, they finished the talk, but the researcher felt uncomfortable because their meeting was interrupted three times.
