Oral Activity.
A: Professor Smith, you are an experienced computer professional of Microsoft Corporation and we know that the Internet is developing at high speed and playing a big role in our life. Could you introduce some basic concepts about the Internet to our audience?
B: Okay. There are several main concepts which need to be understood.
A: What are they?
B: Generally speaking, the Internet is one computer which is connected to another computer through a phone line, cable or wireless signal. Via the Internet we can communicate with our friends in a fraction of a second.
A: Could you further explain it?
B: No problem. The local computer is the one you work on to develop your websites. The remote computer or server is the one that contains websites and serves up the web pages to your visitor.
A: When using the servers, what aspects should we pay attention to?
B: Before you can work on servers, you have to log on to them.
A: Why?
B: Because of security reasons. And remember that the file on the server is considered to be the original copy. If you need to make changes to an existing web page, you should retrieve a copy of the original from the website first.
A: What’s the reason?
B: If someone is updating the website, this will avoid your overwriting someone else’s changes and also allows you to test the new pages before publishing it to the website.
A: We all learned more knowledge about the Internet. Thanks for your time, Professor Smith.
B: My pleasure.
