Zhangxi She Ethnic Township is located in Dongyuan County, Heyuan City. The villages ofShanglan and Xialan together have a She ethnic population of over 6,000 people. According to theQing Dynasty's "Zhangxi Lan Family Genealogy," during the Ming Dynasty, the Lan familysettled in Zhangxi. General Lan's tours were the most important activities that united the local Sheethnic people. The starting point of General Lan's tours, the site of the General Lan Temple, wasbuilt in the early Qing Dynasty and is an important historical witness to these activities. Legend has it that General Lan, named Lan Guanghui, was the second son of King FumaWang. Due to his exceptional abilities, extraordinary wisdom, and meritorious service to thecountry, he was titled "Guardian General" by Emperor Gaoxin and assisted in governing thecountry. Under his command were five brave and capable commanders, each leading a division oftroops. One year, on the ninth day of the fourth lunar month, General Lan and his troops returnedvictorious. At that time, the She people and the army slaughtered cattle and pigs, sang and dancedto celebrate the general's victory, creating a lively scene. Since then, every year on the ninth dayof the fourth lunar month, descendants of the She people from Shanglan, Xialan, Shuangtian inDongyuan, and Heping Heshui gather together to hold the grand General Lan's tour event. Before the event, the clan leader mobilizes each household to clean both inside and outsidetheir houses and villages. The central square of the village is prepared, with large wooden drumsand other equipment set up. Around the drum tower, flags representing General Lan, along withfive-colored flags and zigzag flags, are hung, and long strings of firecrackers are placed at thecorners. Below the tower, strong warriors armed with weapons and spears stand guard. On the day of the event, the ceremonies such as "inviting the gods" and "recruiting soldiers" are conducted first. This is followed by the enlistment ceremony, where the enlistment officerascends the platform to enlist soldiers, and the commanders of each division step forward toreceive their orders and flags. The "Central Camp" is represented by the "Three Qin Army" holding a yellow flag, the "Eastern Camp" by the "Nine Yi Army" holding a blue flag, the"Southern Camp" by the "Eight Man Army" holding a red flag, the "Western Camp" by the "SixRong Army" holding a black flag, and the "Northern Camp" by the "Five Di Army" holding awhite flag. After the enlistment, the five divisions of troops are lined up in the square, with theirbanners fluttering and morale soaring, ready for action. Following this, drums and gongs are sounded, and under the escort of the five divisions oftroops, the sacred tablet of General Lan is carried from house to house to tour the village. Eachhousehold sets off firecrackers and presents offerings to welcome the procession, praying forblessings, disaster prevention, and the protection of life, prosperity, and well-being for theirfamilies. The She ethnic General Lan's tour festival holds significant influence among the She ethnicpeople in Heyuan and surrounding areas. It serves as an important site for them to reminisce abouthistory and consolidate their identity. It plays a crucial role in local social development, ruralgovernance, and other aspects.
