The string puppetry of Zijin County, Guangdong Province, belongs to the tradition of11string-controlled puppets. It was introduced from Fujian by residents of Baodong Village, LongwoTown, including Deng Mucun, in 1885, leading to the establishment of the Ronghua Hall troupe. By the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican era, there were eight puppetry troupes in ZijinCounty, such as Ronghua Hall, Chonghua Hall, and Xinyanhua, which were active in rural areasof Zijin County and neighboring regions like Wuhua, Huiyang, and Lufeng. The string puppets of Longwo are finely crafted, approximately 60-70 centimeters tall. Theirheads, hands, and feet are carved from camphor wood, while their bodies are made of bamboo(with bamboo bark). These parts are assembled and adorned with powdered lacquer, painted invarious costumes to depict characters. The roles encompass all six traditional categories: male lead, female lead, painted face, old man, clown, and child roles. Their traditional repertoire draws fromfolk legends, stories, and historical figures, featuring works such as "Legend of the White Snake,""Xue Rengui's Expedition to the East," and "Go into town in disguise." They portray civil andmilitary officials, talented individuals, heroes, villagers, peasant women, and mythical figures, promoting themes of loyalty, patriotism, punishment of evil, promotion of good, and longing forideal love, extolling heroic figures and the creative spirit of the people. After the establishment ofthe People's Republic of China, modern productions such as "Call of the Party," "IncreasedProduction with Land," and "Sound of Silver Mountain" were created. During performances, a small stage is set up where only the puppets are visible, and thepuppeteers stand behind the curtain at a high position, manipulating the puppets and reciting orsinging. The string puppetry of Zijin County is performed in Hakka dialect, with musical tunesderived from Cantonese opera, Huachao opera tunes, folk tunes, and mountain song melodies, totaling more than 20 styles, forming its unique style. The lyrics and dialogue are natural and thestage language is typical, simple, and understandable, extensively employing Hakka slang, proverbs, puns, and achieving unique artistic effects through humorous asides, question-and-answer sequences, and group singing. The accompaniment consists of orchestral and percussion instruments, conducted by the sudrum. The orchestral section is led by the suona, accompanied by erhu, gaohu, yangqin, andpercussion instruments such as drums, wood blocks, small gongs, and large cymbals. The string puppetry of Zijin County exudes a strong local flavor and folk customs, holdinghigh historical and cultural value in traditional drama and folk culture. The scripts and lyricsreflect the changes in local social culture, providing important evidence for studying the socialdevelopment of Hakka areas. Local cultural departments have taken measures to protect andinherit string puppetry, but issues such as the shrinking performance market, inadequate facilities, and aging performers still need urgent attention for protection.
