I. Course Introduction (including teaching goals and requirements) :
This course aims to:
Introduce the nature of oral interpreting between languages, the skills required, the training methods, the profession and the working environment.
Consolidate the foundation for students to develop the professional interpreting skills in order to confidently select and undertake consecutive interpreting assignments.
Introduce the general principles of Consecutive Interpreting as well as more advanced interpreting skills and exercises.
Provide more experience in consecutive interpreting and sight interpreting exercises, preparing for the more advanced interpreting training in the second year.
There are two modules in this course: 1) Foundation of interpreting; 2) Consecutive Interpreting. The former aims at helping students transit from bilingual users to the consecutive interpreters of short passages, focusing on the training of the listening skill for interpreting, and basic interpreting skills; Consecutive Interpreting aims at training the consecutive interpreters of long passages, emphasizing on accumulating interpreting experience. The whole course covers public speaking, note-taking, cross-cultural communication, figures, coping techniques, preparation, etiquette in foreign affairs.
II.Teaching Syllabus :
2 Modules: Foundation of Interpreting and Consecutive Interpreting (Interpreting Skills and Topics of Interpreting)
Foundation of Interpreting:
Listening,information extraction, short-term memory, reconstruction of information, note-taking, figures, deverbalization(去掉词语外壳抓住含义).
Consecutive Interpreting:
Preparation, coping techniques, interpreting practice and observation report, seminar, interpreter as cross-cultural mediator.

Attendance is mandatory. You are required to attend the class. Four or more unexcused absences may disqualify you from taking the final exam. If, for some justifiable reason, you are not able to come to class on a certain day, you must advise the instructor in advance, unless it’s an emergency. Supporting documents (e.g., doctor’s note) should be submitted in order for an absence to be excused.
There will be 3 tests during the semester (they are about the Public speaking, short-term memory, and note taking). Make-up tests will not be permitted except in the case of illness or emergency.
The final exam will cover everything studied during the semester. You are also expected to give an oral presentation on a topic of your own choice towards the end of the semester.
