My English Teacher

My English teacher is a woman of medium-height. She is in her thirties. She always has a smile on her face and a kind word for her students. As she is also a little plump, she gives people the impression that she is a patient, responsible and easy-going teacher. This picture of my teacher is true.

She devotes herself to the cause of education. She prepares and organizes her lessons so well that we are fully attentive in her class. After class she often gives lesson to the students who have been absent from school because of illness. With her help, we have become more and more interested in our English study. Whenever we have problems we will turn to her for help. As a matter of fact,she is more an intimate friend to us than a respected teacher. We have learnt a great for her devotion to her work, her conscientiousness in teaching, and her readiness to help others.

My Mother

I love my mother very much. Like many other Chinese women, my mother is diligent. She works in a primary school. In order to teach well, she prepares her lectures very carefully and often works so late at night.

My mother is very kind and sincere. She gets along with her neighbors and colleagues. When they have difficulties, she is always ready to lend them a helpful hand. Therefore she is loved and respected in our neighborhood.

Mother often tells me to be honest and upright. She expects me to be useful to the people in the future. Up to now, I still remember her saying: Do as much as you can and you will succeed.

[1] Chou En-laiarrived [at the guest house for state visitors] at 4:30. His gaunt, expressive face was dominated bypiercing eyes, conveying a mixture of intensity and repose, of wariness andcalm self-confidence.He wore an immaculately tailored gray Mao tunic, at once simple and elegant. He moved gracefully and with dignity, filling aroom not by his physical dominance (as did Mao or de Gaulle) but by his air ofcontrolled tension, steely discipline, and self-control, as if he were a coiledspring. He conveyed an easy casualness, which, however, did not deceive thecareful observer. The quick smile, the comprehending expression that made clear he understood English even withouttranslation, the palpable alertness, were clearly the features of a man who hadhad burned into him by a searing half-century thevital importance of self-possession. I greeted him at the door of the guesthouse and ostentatiously stuck out my hand. Chou gave me a quick smile and took it. It was the firststep in putting the legacy of thepast behind us.

 [2] Unlike Mao, Chou hadlived abroad; born of a middle-class family in 1898, he had been a brilliant studentand had studied and worked in France and Germany in the 1920s. When I met him.he had been a leaderof the Chinese Communist movement for nearly fifty years. He had been on theLong March. He had beenthe only Premier the People's Republic had had—nearly twenty-two years—and for nine of thoseyears he had also been Foreign Minister. Chou had negotiated with GeneralMarshall in the 1940s. He wasa figure out of history. He was equally at home in philosophy, reminiscence,historical analysis, tacticalprobes, humorous repartee. His command of facts, in particular his knowledge of American eventsand, for that matter, of my own background, was stunning. There was littlewasted motion either inhis words or in his movements. Both reflected the inner tensions of a manconcerned, as he stressed,with the endless daily problems of a people of 800 million and the effort topreserve ideological faithfor the next generation...

[3] Chou couldalso display an extraordinary personal graciousness. When junior members of our party tookill, he would visit them. Despite the gap in our protocol rank he insisted thatour meetings alternate betweenmy residence and the Great Hall of the People so that he would call on me as often as I called onhim. After we had settled on Paris as our future point of contact, Chounevertheless proposed that wecontinue to use the Pakistani channel occasionally because we have a saying in China that oneshouldn't break the bridge after crossing it.

[4] ...The Chineseseemed to regard him with special reverence, to see in him of all their leaders a special quality.On a visit in late 1975 1 asked a young interpreter about Chou's health; tearsbrimmed in her eyes as shetold me he was gravely ill. It was no accident that he was so deeply mourned inChina after his death,or that the extraordinary expressions of yearning for greater freedom thatappeared in China in the late1970s invoked and praised his name.

15] Chou En-lai,in short, was one of the two or three most impressive men I have ever met Urbane, infinitelypatient, extraordinarily intelligent, subtle, he moved through our discussionswith an easy grace thatpenetrated to the essence of our new relationship as if there were no altenative.
