1.5 IELTS reading strategies 雅思阅读策略P1-6
P1 Now let’s look at Section 1.5 IELTS Reading Strategies. IELTS reading incorporates three passages (roughly 1000-1400 words per passage excerpted from well-known scientific journals ) and 40 questions in total, which is highly challenging to most Chinese readers pertaining to the pressure of reading speed and accuracy. In the part of language acquisition, we have acquired insights to identify the trunk in a long sentence(识别长句主干)and techniques to apply linearity in translating a long sentence into Chinese(顺译长句成汉语) in order to improve reading efficiency. Based on which, we are going to explore a three-step fast reading strategy (“三步走”快速阅读策略)in this section. This fast reading strategy is question-driven& synonym-driven:
Step 1. Identify the sentence trunk(SVO主谓宾/SVP主系表) and key words(关键词) in the questions.先看题,识别主干及关键词。
Step 2. Locate inthe original text based on the key words identified in the questions.根据题目中的关键词原文定位。
Step 3. Confirm answers based on the synonym-driven model.同义词契对答案。
P2 To be specific, we can adopt skimming(略读) to get the general idea (大意)by reading the opening & concluding paragraphs(首段&尾段), or the topic sentence(主题句) (e.g. the 1st,the 2nd ,the last, or the 1st+the last sentence of each paragraph,etc.).
We can also use scanning(查读/寻读) to acquire specific information. While scanning, we shall pay close attention to such locating words (定位词)as figures, capitalized,italic and bold letters, proper nouns including names of people, place,country, company, organization, etc.
P3 Also, we shall stay calm and make full use of both skimming and scanning when necessary, we shall also make adjustments of reading strategy & speed according to different types ofquestions. Above all, we shall pay special attention to such signposts(信号词)as marker words, connectors, linking words and transitional words.

2. Reading strategies: summarize various IELTS reading questions into four types, and follow a three-step general reading strategy to read faster along with skimming and scanning; build up students’ critical thinking, team-work spirit and patriotism outlook, etc.
