The First Week of University: A New Beginning

The first week of university was a transformative experience, one that I will always remember as the beginning of a new chapter in my life. As a freshman of English major, I was eager to immerse myself in a diverse curriculum that included literature, language studies, and critical thinking. However, I was also apprehensive about leaving behind the familiarity of home and stepping into the unknown. The campus, with its sprawling lawns and towering buildings, seemed both daunting and full of promise.

On the first day, I stood in front of the Mingde building, my heart racing with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The sun was shining brightly, casting playful shadows on the path as students hurried by. I took a deep breath, adjusted my backpack, and walked in, determined to make the most of this new opportunity.

Inside, the air buzzed with conversation. Students were scattered around, some looking as lost as I felt, while others seemed to be old friends, chatting and laughing. I noticed a girl standing alone, looking at her phone. She had a friendly face, and I felt an inexplicable urge to approach her.

"Hi, I'm Emma," I said, offering a smile. "Is this your first day too?"

She looked up, her eyes meeting mine with a warm smile. "Yes, it is! I'm Lily. Nice to meet you, Emma."

We quickly discovered we had the same Integrated English class and decided to go in together. As we entered the classroom, the sight of rows of desks and a large whiteboard filled me with a sense of anticipation. The teacher, Miss Xu,with a kind smile, was already there, arranging her notes. We found seats near the back and settled in.

Miss Xu began the class with an introduction to the Integrated English. "This course," she explained, "is designed to enhance your language skills, broaden your literary horizons, and develop your critical thinking abilities. We will explore a wide range of texts, from classic literature to contemporary works, and engage in discussions that challenge your perspectives."

Her words resonated with me. I glanced at Lily, who was nodding along, her eyes wide with interest. In that moment, I felt a connection with her, a shared excitement for the journey we were about to embark on. It was as if we were both on the brink of a grand adventure, and we had found a companion to share it with.

After the class, we decided to grab lunch at the campus cafeteria. The cafeteria was bustling with students, the air filled with the aroma of food. We joined the line, chatting about our expectations for the semester.

"I'm really looking forward to the language studies part of the course," Lily said, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "I think it's fascinating how language shapes our understanding of the world."

"Me too," I replied. "And I'm excited about the critical thinking aspect. I think it's important to question what we read and analyze different viewpoints."

As we found a table and sat down, I felt a wave of contentment wash over me. The initial nervousness had faded, replaced by a sense of belonging. I realized that university was not just about academics; it was about meeting new people, making friends, and discovering new passions.

Over the next few days, Lily and I became inseparable. We attended classes together, studied in the library, and explored the campus. We met other students, each with their own unique stories and interests, and slowly but surely, we began to build a community.

One evening, as we were walking back to our dorms after a long day of classes, Lily turned to me and said, "I'm so glad we met on the first day. I don't think I would have survived the first week without you."

I smiled, feeling a warmth spread through my chest. "I feel the same way. It's amazing how a simple 'hello' can lead to such a great friendship."

The first week of university was a rollercoaster of experiences, but it was also a time of growth and discovery. I learned that stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new opportunities could lead to wonderful friendships and unforgettable experiences. As I looked forward to the rest of the semester, I felt a renewed sense of excitement and anticipation for what was to come.

In the end, the first week of the Integrated English program taught me that the key to thriving in a new environment is to be open to change and to cherish the connections we make along the way. With a heart full of hope and a mind eager for knowledge, I embraced the adventure that was university life, knowing that each day would bring new challenges and opportunities for growth.

Descriptive writing

The descriptive essay presents a word-picture of persons, places, objects, and emotions. The writer uses acareful selection of specific and concrete details to make a clear dominant impression on the reader. A descriptive essay can be objective or subjective and the writer 's purpose is to involve the reader enough so that s/he can actually visualize what is being described. The best description appeals to the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste.

Descriptive Writing: Crafting a Vivid Word-Picture

Descriptive writing is an art form that invites readers to step into a world crafted by words. It goes beyond merely conveying information; it aims to create an experience that engages the reader's senses and emotions. Here’s a detailed exploration of how to master the craft of descriptive writing:

1. Purpose and Approach

Objective vs. Subjective: Descriptive essays can be either objective or subjective. An objective description focuses on factual details without personal bias, while a subjective description allows the writer to infuse their personal feelings and interpretations into the narrative.

Dominant Impression: The writer aims to leave a clear, unified impression on the reader. This is achieved by selecting specific details that reinforce the central theme or mood of the description.

2. Use of the Five Senses

Sight,Sound,Touch,Smell,Taste

3. Selection of Specific and Concrete Details

4. Structure and Organization
