Susan Young is a reporter for the Man and Nature program on CCTV 9. On March 26, 2015 she went to interview some people on the street for a special edition for Earth Hour 2015. Soon she met Jerry, a 19-year-old student who was happy to take questions about the coming event. With your partner, fill in the blanks with the information provided by the text or from other sources. Then read the conversation aloud in class. (“S” stands for Susan and “J” for Jerry.)
S: (to the camera) Hi, everybody. I’m Susan Young. As you might know, Earth Hour, a global movement to switch lights off for an hour on the last Saturday of March, is just around the corner this year. I wonder how many people know about the event. Let’s find it out now. (to Jerry) Hi, there. I’m Susan Young from Man and Nature, CCTV 9. Can you spare me a few minutes?
J: All right.
S: I have some questions to ask you.
J: Go ahead.
S: First, can you tell us who you are?
J: I am a student from XXX .
S: Good. Have you ever heard of Earth Hour ?
J: Yes, of course.
S: Then do you know when Earth Hour comes every year?
J: Oh, is it by the end of March?
S: Very close. It is on the last Saturday of March . So this year’s Earth Hour is just two days away.
J: Oh, really!
S: The next question may be a little difficult. Do you know who started the event? And when did it start?
J: Perhaps World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) ? I’m not sure. I’ve read it somewhere. But I can’t remember it clearly now. Sorry, I can’t answer the other question.
S: You are right about the founder of the event. As for the other question, OK, let me tell you: it was in 2007, when 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change . My next question is, can you name some of the world-famous buildings or structures that have switched off to support Earth Hour in the past several years?
J: Let me think. Sydney Opera House , the Forbidden City , CN Tower , Golden Gate Bridge, and Buckingham Palace . (or Sydney Harbor Bridge, the Colosseum, Table Mountain, Christ the Redeemer statue, etc.)
S: Very good. Do you want to do something for this year’s Earth Hour?
J: Sure. I will turn off the lights in my home at the time.
S: Sounds great! Thank you for your time.
J: You are welcome. I’m glad to take part in your program.
S: Thank you again! Good-bye!
J: Bye!
