1 Earth Hour is organized by World Wide Fund forNature (WWF). With hundreds of millionsof supporters and a global network across 162 countries, it is one of theworld’s largest conservation organizations.
2 Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million peopleand more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take astand against climate change. Only a year later Earth Hour had become a globalmovement with more than 50 million people from 35 countries. Global landmarkssuch as the Sydney Harbor Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge inSan Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hopefor a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. In March 2009, more people tookpart in the third Earth Hour. Over 4,000 cities in 88 countries switched off topledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largestglobal climate change initiative. On Saturday 27 March 2010, a record of 128countries joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings andlandmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off.Earth Hour 2011 took place on Saturday March 26, at 8:30 pm (local time). Some ofthe world’s most well-known landmarks, including the Forbidden City, Eiffel Tower,Buckingham Palace, Golden Gate Bridge, Table Mountain, Christ the Redeemer statueand Sydney Opera House switched off their lights for the “lights out” event.The next year, Earth Hour launched its campaign “I Will If You Will” to engageits growing global community to go beyond the hour and join efforts publicly throughFacebook, Twitter, Google+ and e-mail. And in 2013, the world’s first EarthHour Forest began in Uganda, as a first step to fight serious deforestation inthe country. Some of the world’s most well-known landmarks, including the ForbiddenCity, Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Golden Gate Bridge, Table Mountain,Christ the Redeemer statue and Sydney Opera House switched off their lights forthe “lights out” event.
