Chapter 1 What is Translation

A. Different Perspectives:

     Translation is a science/ an art/ a craft/ a skill/ an operation/ a language activity/ communicating.

     The study of translation has been dominated, and to a degree still is, by the debate about its status as an art or a science. Translation is not only a science with its own laws and methods but also an art of reproduction and re-creation. It demands a broad and profound knowledge. The linguist inevitably approaches translation from a ‘ scientific’ point of view, seeking to create some kind of ‘objective’ description of the phenomenon. It could, however, be argued that translation is an ‘art’ or a ‘craft’ and therefore not amenable to objective.
