Introduction

1 Background

The theme of this story is obviously suggested at the very end when the authordescribes the legacy of the boy’s encounter with the old woman as “a wisdom tutoredby nature itself, about the seen and unseen, about things that change and things that arechangeless, and about the fact that no matter how seemingly different two souls maybe, they possess the potential for that most precious, rare thing—an enduring andrewarding friendship”.

The story is not very subtle, nor is it particularly dramatic, but it has delightfuldescriptions of beautiful landscape, and description of a friendship between two souls.

What is particularly interesting about this friendship is the fact that it occurs betweentwo people who are “seemingly different” in every way: One is an American boy oftwelve; and the other is an English woman old enough to be the boy’s grandmother.They are total strangers, but their chance encounter almost immediately leads to abeautiful friendship. This is because they need each other. First of all, they are bothlonely: The boy is lonely because he is alone in a foreign country with his parents; thewoman is lonely because she has lost her dear husband and besides she is not in goodhealth. Therefore, they find consolation in each other’s company. But they haveanother important bond—their common interest in nature. For the boy the Wood is hisprivate paradise, and for the woman it is part of her husband’s legacy. The boy is fullof curiosity about the mysteries of nature, and the woman might be said to hold thekey to the treasuries of human knowledge, being married to a professor of biology.One might also mention the shortbread the woman keeps supplying for the boy, whichhe loves. But the real reason for their friendship is the old woman’s selfless love andcare for the boy. It is often said that true love is in the giving and not in the taking. Thewoman takes delight in giving the boy good food to eat, and good books to read. Andthey are precisely what the boy wants at his age. Does the woman ask for anything inreturn? No. However, through giving, she cannot help receiving. Although totallyunaware, the boy has given the woman great consolation too.

The boy will never forget this friendship either. In this world, true friendship is bothrare and precious. And the boy is very lucky to have found such a wonderful friend inhis childhood. What he learned about nature with the help and encouragement of thiswoman in Bear Wood may very well have determined his life: the things he hasobserved and the things he can’t see; the things that change as well as the things thatdo not change. They all combine to form the wisdom of Bear Wood that the boy hasreceived as a precious gift.

2 Structure

The text can be divided into three parts. The introduction (paras. 1–4) describes theAmerican boy’s first six months in England. The body paragraphs (paras. 5–35) relatehow the boy met Mrs. Robertson-Glasgow and how they remained friends till herdeath. In the last two paragraphs (paras. 36–37), the boy reflects years later on thelegacy of that friendship.
