Sample 3 is an excerpt from Tess of the d’Urbervilles by English writer Thomas Hardy. This novel describes the tragic life of a beautiful and pure girl after disgrace. Tess, the heroine, started where she met Angel Clare, the hero, with whom she fell in love. The sample is from the part where Angel proposes to marry Tess. Instead of excitement, Tess experiences a painful emotional struggle because of her past. Notice how the author uses different ways to show thoughts, physical responses, and the senses to identify 丁ess’ emotions.
