3.2  Types of omission

1) Omitting pronoun

(1) Omitting personal pronoun 

Ex 1. He was thin and haggard and he looked miserable.

  【V】他消瘦而憔悴,看上去一副可怜相。

Ex 2. Dr. Bethune began to work as soon as he came to the front.

   【V】白求恩大夫一到前线,就立即开始工作。

Ex 3. We have 366 days in the leap year.

   【V】闰年有366天。

Ex 4. We live and learn.

  【V】活到老,学到老。


(2) Omitting possessive pronoun

Ex . He shrugged his shoulders, shook his head, cast up his eyes, but said nothing.

  【V】他耸耸肩,摇摇头,两眼望天,一句话也没说。


(3) Omitting “it” 

Ex 1. Outside it was pitch dark and it was raining cats and dogs.

   【V】外面一团漆黑,大雨倾盆。

Ex 2. It is never late to mend.

   【V】改过不嫌迟。

Ex 3. It was with some difficulty that he found the way to his own house.

   【V】他费了不少劲才找到了回家的路。

2) Omitting connective

(1) Omitting coordinated connective

Ex. He looked gloomy and troubled.

   【V】他看上去有些忧愁不安。

(2) Omitting subordinated connective

Ex 1. We knew spring was coming as we had seen a robin.

   【V】我们看到了一只知更鸟,知道春天快要到了。

Ex 2. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

【V】冬天来了,春天还会远吗?

Ex 3. Modesty helps a person to make progress whereas conceit makes a person lag behind.

   【V】虚心使人进步,骄傲使人落后。

3) Omitting article

Ex 1. A parrot can talk like a man.

  【V】鹦鹉会人语。

4) Omitting preposition

Ex 1. Trees grow along both banks of the canal.

  【V】运河两岸长着树木。

Ex 2. Now complaints are heard in all parts of that country.

  【V】该国各地目前怨声载道。

5) Other omission

Ex . University applicants who had worked at a job would receive preference over those who had not.

  【V】报考大学的人,有工作经验者优先录取。
