Nature of translation

3. Nature of Translation : a science, a skill, and an art.

Eugine A. Nida holds that ,“ translating is far more than a science. It is also a skill, and in

ultimately analysis fully satisfactory translation is always an art.”

 1) Science:

There are some rules and  objective laws to be followed.

 2) Art:

   it needs creation.

Eg.  Able was I ere I saw Elba.(Palindrome,回文)

          (落败孤岛孤败落)

 3) Skill: It needs translation skills or techniques.

   eg.  amplification (增词法), conversion(词性转换法),division(拆分法/切分法).

Ex 1. The lion is the king of animals.

   【V】狮子是百兽之王。

(animals, 是复数;汉语的复数须加词:增译法)

Ex2. Talking with his son, the old man was the forgiver of the young man’s past wrong doings.

  【V】老人同儿子交谈的时候,原谅了年轻人以前所做的错事.

(词性转化法:forgiver 名词→原谅(动词)
