Prof. Dr. Rui Hu has studied and worked at the University of Goettingen in Germany for more than 12 years before he came to work at Hohai University since September 2015. The research focus of Prof. Hu was aquifer characterization based on hydraulic tomography, groundwater modelling and remediation. Through the long-year cooperation between him and the scientists from Germany, he developed a series of hydraulic travel time based inversion approaches. These approaches allow us to use limited amount ofdata to reconstruct an aquifer structure in a very efficient way, providing thespatial distribution of diffusivity, specific storage and hydraulic conductivity. The research work was published internationally in well known journals such as Water Resources Research and Journal of Hydrology, as well asin German journals such as Grundwasser and SDGG. During the time as Prof. Huwas working in Germany, he was the key member for designing and constructingthe test site “Stegemühle” and “Neutra” with more than 30 groundwater wells atthe University of Goettingen.

Hehas contributed substantially in the supervision of 10 master and 5 doctoral students in Germany and 14 master and 5 doctoral students in China.

Work experience

From Nov. 2004 to May 2011, Rui Hu was employed by the Geoscience Centre of University of Göttingen as a part time research assistant (monthly 80-120 working hours), except during the time between May 2008 and August 2008, during which he worked as a full-time research assistantat the Kansas Geological Survey, Kansas University, USA.

From May 2011 to Dec. 2013, Dr. Rui Hu was employed by Geoscience Centre as a full-time post-doctoral research fellow.

Since Dec. 2013 Dr. Rui Hu has been working as lecturer, researchfellow and assistant professor (full-time) in the Department of AppliedGeology, Geoscience Centre of University of Göttingen. His main functions areto give lectures to master students, to perform scientific research work and tosupervise master and doctoral students.

He gives lectures to the master students forour international master program and assists during other lecture courses withtutorials and field trips:

Projects

1. From 2007 till now, he was active in the research and teaching program with Direct-push techniques for the principle investigations of the Department of Applied Geology. His task within this project was to build up a field test site (test site Stegemühle, Göttingen,Germany) for hydrogeological research work, as well as for long term educationto the students.

2. From 2007 to 2010, Rui joined the workinggroup Geohydraulics in my Department Applied Geology (group leader: Dr.Brauchler) as a doctoral research assistant. He did his PhD research within the context of a third party funded project (DFG research funding, German ResearchFoundation; financial volume of 300.000 Euros). His duties comprised next toresearch into field characterisation methodologies, assistance in the management of the project as well as the development and the field implementation of hydraulic tomographic inversion schemes.

3. During his post-doctoral research (2011-2013), he applied his hydraulic tomographical methods together with scientists from different fields of activities in a project “High-efficient heatpump systems with geothermal and solar thermal energy sources”. This project was funded by the European Union and the state of Lower Saxony with a funding of 370.000 Euro for Göttingen research work. The team work is to analyse thesynergy effects of solar heat and ground coupled heat pumps and to investigatethe relative importance of heat transport processes in the subsurface. The ground heat transfer issues in the aquifer were investigated by the Göttingen research group with detailed hydrogeological experiments and simulations. Withhis expertise in aquifer characterization, this project was successfully finished by the beginning of 2014.

4. At the end of his post-doctoral research(2012-2013), within the project “Geothermie und Hochleistungsbohrtechnik” (Geothermal Energy and High-Performance Drilling Technology, 400.000 Euroresearch funding, funded by Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture), heorganized and participated in the implementation and characterization of anexperimental field site for shallow geothermal energy in Göttingen. This testsite was conceptualised for detailed high-resolution field experiments in orderto characterise fractured rock aquifers with respect to their fluid and heat flow properties. The 5 boreholes were equipped with high – end spatially distributed sensors that allow the detailed temporal and spatial registrationof thermal and pressure signals. The application is, next to fundamental research in the field of characterisation of fractured systems the design of heatabstraction systems within the context of renewable, i.e. geothermal energygeneration.

5. Since the end of 2013, he was involved in an European Research Project “MUSTANG Project FP7, research funding 500.000 Euro, funded by European Research Foundation) on CO2 storage. His task was to developa tomographical method for the characterization of the CO2 spreading in thesubsurface reservoir during the CO2 injection process.
