1.多重定语从句的种类与特点

同时修饰一个先行项,或者分别修饰各自的先行项的两个或两个以上的定语从句就构成了多重定语从句。

Animals and plants must have a habitat,or home,which is comfortable and clean,and where there is enough food and other resources.(人教大纲版高一上第66页)

动植物必须拥有一个栖息地或家园,而这个栖息地应舒适、清洁,有足够的食物和其他资源。

I collected my instruments around me,with which I would light the flame of life in the dead thing that lay at my feet.(人教大纲版高二下第15页)

我把身边的工具都收集起来,用这些工具我可以将生命之光注入到这个躺在我脚下的没有生命的东西的身体里。

She is the only girl I know that can play the guitar.

她是我认识的唯一能够弹吉他的女孩。

提示:

第一个句子由连词and连接的两个定语从句同时修饰其先行项home。第二个句子中的第一个定语从句with which I would light the flame of life in the dead thing修饰my instruments,第二个定语从句that lay at my feet修饰the dead thing。第三个句子中的第一个定语从句I know修饰the only girl,第二个定语从句that can play the guitar修饰“先行项the only girl+第一个定语从句I know”。

常见的多重定语从句有并列式多重定语从句、链式多重定语从句和重叠式多重定语从句三种。

(1)并列式多重定语从句。

这种定语从句的特点是,两个或两个以上的定语从句由并列连词and,or和but等连接,修饰同一个先行项;通常定语从句要冠以关系词,以明确其性质和修饰对象,也就是说要重复使用关系词。关系词可以相同,在定语从句中起同样功能;也可以不同,即在句子中的功能可以不一样。

She has helped thousands of men and women come to terms with things that bother the mand that they could not talk about with others.(人教大纲版高一下第34页)

她帮助成千上万个男男女女度过难关,摆脱了难以启齿的烦恼事情。

I want to write about people you seldom read about,for example people who have AIDS or who are addicted to drugs.(人教大纲版高二上第12页)

我想写关于你们在报纸上很少读到的人的文章,如艾滋病患者或者吸毒成瘾者等。

Dr.King grew up in a city where nearly half the population was black,but where segregation took away many of their fights.(人教大纲版高二下第44页)

(2)链式多重定语从句。

这种定语从句的特点是,各个从句修饰各自的先行项,而不是同时修饰一个先行项。

No records that are dangerous to the person who is attempting it or to others are allowed.(人教大纲版高三第4页)

那些对尝试创纪录的人或其他的人有危险的事情是不允许进入纪录大全的。

Organic vegetables are those that are grown without chemicals that can be harmful to human beings or the environment.(人教大纲版高一下第4页)

有机蔬菜是不施加对人和环境有害的化学物质而生长的蔬菜。

There was a woman who was the boss of the office in which I wanted to work.(人教大纲版高一下第55页)

有一个女性,是我想去的办公室的老板。

Many people tend to listen to their parents or to their teachers who often have expectations that are hard to live up to.(人教大纲版高三第98页)

很多人倾向于听家长或教师的意见,但是他们所期望的往往是学生难以办到的。

(3)重叠式多重定语从句。

这种定语从句的特点是,第一个定语从句修饰其前的先行项,第二个定语从句修饰“该先行项+第一个定语从句”。这时,第一个定语从句的关系词多为从句的宾语,通常省略。

I read all the books I could find that threw light upon these matters.(人教大纲版高二下第15页)

我读了我能找到的并能说明这些情况的书籍。

Maggie was the only teacher we know who taught maths in that high school.

玛吉是我们在那所高中认识的唯一的教数学的老师。
