2.比较级(+than)前的修饰语

(1)在“比较级(+than)”结构中常可用much,very much,so much,a lot,quite a lot,a great/good deal,(just)a bit,a little bit,still,even,far,any,no,rather,分数词,倍数词等修饰语。

We actually learn a foreign language much faster than we do our mother tongue.(人教大纲版高三第67页)

事实上我们学习外语要比我们学习母语快得多。

The knife and fork that are closest to your plate are a little bit bigger than the ones beside them.(人教大纲版高一上第38页)

靠近餐盘的刀叉稍大一点。

He worked very much harder than ever.

他干得越发卖力了。

—What do you think of the film?—It's far more interesting than I expected.

——你觉得这部电影如何?——比我预想的有趣多了。

Give me three times more than Antonio borrowed from me.(人教大纲版高二下第71页)

就把安东尼奥借我的钱的三倍还给我算了。

(2)在“比较级(+than)”结构中通常可以加上确定性名词词组作状语,或用“by+名词词组/by far”,放在比较状语从句之后。

He is a head taller.=He is taller by a head.

他要高一个头。

This is far better.=This is better by far.

这好多了。

We arrived 20 minutes earlier.=We arrived earlier by twenty minutes.

我们早到了20分钟。

He is by far the more diligent of the two.

他是两个中较勤奋的一个。

(3)more用作定语时,前面可加上确定性或不确定性的表示量的限定词(不是副词)作修饰语,应该理解为该修饰的对象是more后面的名词。

China's large population meant that the schools had to expand to take in many(不可用much)more students.(人教大纲版高三第103页)

中国人口众多,这就意味着必须扩大学校的规模,以吸收更多的学生。

It takes many(不用much)more hours to ride to Shanghai than to fly there.

开车去上海比乘飞机去那里要花更多的时间。

We need three more chairs than you wish to offer.

除了你们愿意提供的椅子外,我们还要三把。

There will be a lot(可用many代替,但不用much)more people here in about five years'time.

5年后,这儿的人就要多多了。

Translations can be good,but being able to read in English gives you much(much是限定词,而非副词)more choice.(人教大纲版高二上第28页)

读翻译版本固然很好,但能够直接读英语诗,选择的范围就大多了。
