7.不定冠词后置的几种情况

冠词位于名词之前,若名词前有形容词修饰,冠词则位于形容词之前;若形容词前有副词修饰,冠词则位于副词之前。然而有时在某些特殊的情况下,不定冠词要置于形容词或副词之后。

(1)在单数可数名词前有感叹词what以及形容词such,many,half修饰时,不定冠词位于它们之后(参见限定词)。

What an opportunity he has missed!

他失去了多好的机会啊!

It was such an interesting book that Zhang Hua couldn't put it down.

这是本很有趣的书,张华爱不释手。

Many an amateur musician has done better than some professional ones.

许多业余音乐爱好者的表演不亚于职业音乐家。

He left Chengdu half an hour ago.

他半小时前离开了成都。

提示:

但在美国英语中,不定冠词可以位于half之前,因此half an hour又可用a half hour。

(2)单数可数名词前有形容词作定语,而形容词前又有how,however,too,so,as,sufficiently等副词修饰时,不定冠词位于形容词之后,名词之前。

How clever a boy Chao Chao is!

超超是个多么聪明的孩子!

It isn't as easy a thing as you seem to imagine.

这件事不像你所想象的那么简单。

It is too difficult a book for us beginners.

对我们初学者来说,这本书太难了。

I have never seen so fine a sight.

我从未见过这样美丽的景象。

I doubt whether Lord Kitchener is of sufficiently plaint a nature to find favour with the War Office.

我怀疑基钦纳勋爵是否生性就富有抗议精神而受到陆军部的青睐。

提示:

但too前有not或far时,不定冠词要放在not或far之前。

Tom was a far too sensitive man for a club last year.

去年汤姆对办俱乐部过于敏感。

(3)由as,though,that引导的让步倒装句,其表语名词前有形容词作定语时,不定冠词位于形容词之后,名词之前。

Brave a man as he is,he trembles at the sight of a snake.

他虽然勇敢,但一见到蛇就发抖。

Adventurous a character as he is,the phlegm of the classic London policeman is the basic quality here.

这位古伦敦的警察尽管是一个爱冒险的人物,但他的迟钝正是他的主要特点所在。

提示:

但是偶尔也有不用冠词的。

Strong man that he is,John has been severely put to the test during the past few weeks.

尽管约翰是一个很要强的人,但在过去的几周内他受到了严峻的考验。

(4)单数可数名词前的形容词有enough修饰时,不定冠词也可位于enough之后,名词之前。

He is not brave enough a student to attempt the course.

他是个没有足够勇气的学生,不敢试修这门课。

(5)不定冠词位于almost,rather,quite,only(不过,只),no less(或no more)..(than)之后。

I haven't seen her for almost a year.

我几乎有一年未见到她了。

It's rather a pity.

这实在令人惋惜。

We still have quite a way to go.

我们还有相当长的一段路要走。

Bacon is an essayist but he is no less a poet.

培根是一位文学家,但同样也是一位诗人。

No less a person than the President himself made the statement.

不是别人,而是总统本人发表了这次声明。

提示:

当然不定冠词也可位于rather,quite之前。

He came after a rather long time.

经过相当长一段时间后,他终于来了。

Yesterday was a quite hot day.

昨天天气很热。

但必须指出no less或no more后的名词前有形容词时,不定冠词通常要放在形容词之后,偶尔也可见不定冠词放在no less或no more之前的情况,但不普遍。

This is no more beautiful a garden.

这不再是美丽的花园了。

(6)单数可数名词前的形容词比较级有no,much,far,all the等词修饰时,不定冠词位于形容词比较级之后,名词之前。

Mr.John,the tutor is no better a scholar than many a fifth-form boy.

约翰先生这个家庭教师并不比很多五年级学生强。

This allows the writer to give all the more dispassionate and balanced an account of Tristan.

这就使作者对特里斯坦的描绘更加客观、更加协调。

Today's translations,being far more self-conscious an approximation to their originals,could hardly be used as a guide.

现在的翻译作品离原文的自然韵味太远,不适宜作为入门的指导。

(7)单数可数名词前的形容词前有more或less修饰时,不定冠词位于形容词之后,名词之前。

I suppose if I hadn't missed the war it would have seemed much less serious a thing killing a man.

我想假如那时我参加战争的话,杀人或许就是一件很随便的事情了。

Frank is scarcely less significant a figure.

弗兰克并不是个次要人物。
