1.用在物质名词之前

用在物质名词之前，表示物质的种类或泛指物质不定的量。

Snow is white．

雪是白的。

Iron and steel play an important part in industry．

钢铁在工业中作用很大。

Our country is rich in oil．

我们国家盛产石油。

Silver is a precious metal．

银是一种珍贵的金属。

Would you like(some)cake?

要点蛋糕吗?

提示：

即便在物质名词前有一个描绘性定语时，仍可用零冠词。

Raw rubber looks like milk．

生胶看上去像牛奶。

但是:

①如果物质名词带有限制性定语，或整个情景和上下文使这个名词只表示这种物质的某一特定部分时，则要用定冠词。

The snow before the window has melted．

窗前的雪化了。

The hero immediately jumped into the water to save the drowning boy．

英雄立即跳入水中去救溺水的男孩。

The steel produced in our plant is of high quality．

我们厂生产的钢是优质钢。

②如果表示“一种”、“一阵”、“一场”、“一份”或“一个具体情况”等概念时，通常用不定冠词。

There was a heavy rain last night．

昨晚下了一场大雨。

She has built a fire in the next room．

她在隔壁生了火。

I want a tomato soup．

我要一份西红柿汤。

Please bring me a beer．

请给我一杯啤酒。
