莎士比亚的早期喜剧《驯悍记》是以当时新兴市民阶层的家庭为背景的少数几个戏剧之一。喜剧中赤裸裸的封建买卖婚姻的场面给予我们的认识作用,在其他莎剧中是少见的。我们似乎亲眼看到了当时盛行的买卖婚姻是怎样一回事。做父亲的把女儿的“爱”当作一件拍卖品,对两个上门来的求婚者宣布道:“谁承诺给我女儿的礼金(礼金,借用我国的说法,原文‘dower’指婚前议定,丈夫留给妻子的‘身后赠与’。)最重,谁就可以得到我女儿的爱。”
《驯悍记》(The Taming of the Shrew)在1623年莎剧全集第一对开本(the First Folio)出版后才首次问世,此剧完成的年代推测可能在1590~1594年间。但早在1594年,就有另一个名为The Taming of a Shrew(我们姑且称之为《驯悍妇》)的剧本印行,其基本架构与《驯悍记》相仿,只是内容较为粗糙。
中国古典小说巨著《水浒传》妙处很多,但有一点是美中不足,那就是对妇女的态度太坏,写了潘金莲等一批所谓淫妇,使后世的读者、批评者为之扼腕。莎士比亚也被一些人惋惜——在《驯悍记》里,写了一个泼辣骄悍的女子怎样被一个男人制服的故事,现代的一些女权运动积极分子不免颇有微词了。
学者认为《驯悍妇》是当时的其他剧作家仿《驯悍记》所写成。在16世纪时,驯服悍妇的故事盛行于民间,而当时所谓的悍妇,往往是指有主见或多言的妇女,而非充满负面形象的泼辣女子。当时,一般所认为的理想妻子乃是贞洁、寡言且凡事顺从。相反的,有主见或多言的妇女不仅不符合上述的条件,还会被认为是性生活不检点,因而有“上面守不住,下面一定也守不住”的说法。对于悍妇,一般多有惩戒,不仅让她们无法开口说话,连她们的丈夫都可能因“管教不当”而遭连坐惩罚。
罗马喜剧中时常可见刁钻泼辣的妻子。在这个主题上,伊丽莎白时期的剧作家向普劳特斯(Plautus)和泰瑞斯(Terrence)取经,将他们的剧本改编为英语版本。除了剧本,14世纪的英国诗人乔叟也早就在著作中对这个主题贡献良多,形成一股文学传统。
意大利帕度亚城的大富翁巴普提斯塔有两个女儿,大的叫凯瑟丽娜,脾气暴躁,倔强固执比一个男孩还厉害几分,当地人都称她“泼妇”,她的妹妹比恩卡与她相反,温良恭俭,于是向比恩卡求婚的人很多,而凯瑟丽娜却有嫁不出去的危险。这时彼特鲁乔,一个外地的贵族青年,来这里物色对象。他听说凯瑟丽娜长得漂亮,又很富有,没有被她的骄悍的声名吓倒,反而更感兴趣,立意要把她驯服,成为温柔的妻子。从天性上说,彼特鲁乔是个活泼聪敏,心地善良的人。他同时具有一种高超的乔装的把戏,就是在心里完全清楚的情况下,做出一副气愤填膺,昏了头的神态。这种善于做戏的技巧,如果用来做坏事,很可以成为大奸大恶。但彼特鲁乔是个善良的极富同情心的人。他用这种方法,暂时对付这位泼妇,只是装假,开个玩笑,再说他认为这种手段也出于必须,因为对付暴躁的最好的办法是更厉害的暴躁,所谓以毒攻毒。
因为他再三声言,执意要娶“柔顺的凯瑟丽娜”(他就是这么称呼她的)为妻,后者的父亲也只好同意——他巴不得她赶紧嫁出去——答应给以丰厚的陪嫁,并把女儿叫过来,与彼特鲁乔见面,彼特鲁乔已经想好了办法,那就是:“她若是骂我,我就夸她唱歌像夜莺那样美妙;她若是对我皱眉,我就说她像才经露水浸润的玫瑰那么清丽;她若是一句话也不说呢,我就称赞她口才流利。若是她让我走开,我就向她道谢,好像她要留我住一个星期似的。”总之,他的策略是厚着脸皮,掌握主动权。等凯瑟丽娜出来,他一个劲儿地夸她性情柔顺、美丽可爱、天下无双,并表示坚决要娶她做妻子。等她父亲过来询问结果时,他抢先答道,凯瑟丽娜已殷勤地接待了他,答应下星期天结婚。凯瑟丽娜矢口否认,并大吵大嚷,责备父亲不该要她与这样一个泼皮无赖相识。彼特鲁乔就说,老先生且莫以为这是不同意,因为他们俩事先已商量好,她要在父亲面前装出很不乐意这门亲事的样子,其实他们单独在一起时,她温存多情,是个很可人意的未婚妻呢。他临走时说要去备办些华美的礼服,好在星期天的婚礼上把妻子打扮得漂漂亮亮的。
但星期天举行婚礼的时候,宾客们早已到齐,彼特鲁乔迟迟未来。凯瑟丽娜急得直哭。最后他总算露面,但原来答应置办的衣物一件也没带,而且他自己也穿得十分寒碜,骑一匹皮包骨头的瘦马,好像不是来结婚而像是演滑稽戏。这就是他的以暴制暴招数的开始。当人们要他换上好衣服时,他振振有词地说,他亲爱的凯瑟丽娜嫁的是他本人而不是他的衣服。在教堂里,他的行为愈发粗鲁,当神父问他愿不愿娶凯瑟丽娜为妻时,他回答“愿意”,声音极大,吓得神父将圣书弄掉地上,而刚要弯下腰去捡时,又挨了彼特鲁乔一拳,连人带书倒在地上。整个婚礼过程中,他不断地跺脚叫骂,把凯瑟丽娜吓得直打哆嗦。当然他这一味地胡闹,都是装出来的。从教堂回来,巴普提斯塔已办好丰盛的喜筵,但彼特鲁乔抓着凯瑟丽娜要带她回家,不管她怎么抗议,不管岳父怎样挽留,他执意要这样做。他说,做丈夫的有权力随意处置他的老婆。她呢,最后只好服从。我们看到彼特鲁乔最终取得胜利的希望了,我们对这个驯悍的故事的介绍也就到此为止,因为到这里,事情就好办多了。但仔细想一想,就要提出一个问题,彼特鲁乔作为男子汉大丈夫,多了世俗观念这件利器,他的驯悍的功绩自然要打折扣。后来,他继续保持这种粗暴态度,表面温存,实际上严厉地折磨凯瑟丽娜,直至取得对她的绝对专制,例如,彼特鲁乔说:“凯瑟丽娜,你那顶帽子不好看,把那个骗钱货摘下来,丢在地上吧。”他的妻子马上照办,尽管她刚说过她很喜欢这顶帽子。众人皆惊诧莫名。
彼特鲁乔认为这样的夫妻关系有主有从,是一切甜蜜幸福生活的良好开端。不管当时和后世的观众怎么看,不管大男子主义者,男女平权分子怎么想,反正在这出戏剧里,这对主人公是夫唱妇随地过上了美满的生活。凯瑟丽娜在帕度亚仍然出名,不过现在是作为妇德和顺从的典范而出名的。
其实,当时的观众很喜欢看这样的东西。热闹、有趣、过瘾。人们特别是下层的劳动者,为了消遣来到戏院,本来就不是来受什么教育的,他们也不管什么平等思想,只要好看就行了。中世纪以来的闹剧,搬演类似的故事很多,其主要的角色总是那几个,如吹牛大王,惧内的小丈夫,凶悍的妻子等等。舞台是反映生活的一面镜子,大千世界的一切现象都可能被戏剧家作为素材。
《驯悍记》虽然仍摆脱不了传统的影响,但在人物性格刻画方面有了显著的进步。作者注意通过人物的一连串行动来显示其性格特征,也注意在人物之间的对比中加以衬托。
《驯悍记》虽然有部分接近笑剧,但是剧情发展新奇、机智、有活力,在舞台上无论是演出全本、改编或是删减版,向来都受到好评。18世纪时,这个剧本就已经有7种不同的版本了,当中非常知名的就是1754年英国演员及剧作家盖瑞克(David Garrick)的版本,他和改编本剧的作者兰姆一样,只保留凯瑟丽娜和彼特鲁乔这一段,剧名就叫做《凯瑟丽娜与彼特鲁乔》(Catharine and Petruchio)。
另外,在18和19世纪的演出中,彼特鲁乔也常常带着皮鞭,作为制服妻子与奴仆的象征。20世纪最有名的版本,就应属理查德·波顿与伊丽莎白·泰勒所担纲演出的电影了。
“驯服女人”这种主题让许多现代人不以为然,其实早在1611年,弗莱撤(John Fletcher)就曾经为女人喉舌,写过《驯悍记》的续集《女人的奖品》(又名《驯者遭驯》)。剧中描述彼特鲁乔不断遭到第二任妻子玛莉亚(Maria)的奚落与羞辱,在历经四幕的发展之后,才因妻子自愿遵守妇德,而恢复其男性的自尊。
现代有许多《驯悍记》的导演也会删除或减少凯瑟丽娜对彼特鲁乔的臣服,并将凯瑟丽娜遭受的不平待遇低调处理,有的导演甚至在凯瑟丽娜最后的一番话中,暗示她对那段话并非真正地心悦诚服。这些改编都得以拯救莎士比亚,使他免于被冠上男性沙文主义的封号。
《驯悍记》的演出时而着眼于诙谐嬉闹的轻松面,时而注重暴戾与压迫的黑暗面,无论从什么角度来诠释,都提醒我们:在看似欢乐的莎翁喜剧中,隐藏着值得深思的严肃议题。
