导读

《爱的徒劳》——莎士比亚的这部早期喜剧(约写于1594年)是值得注意的。它在语言风格上非常有特点,明快、泼辣、亲切、而又富于幽默感;并没有什么曲折复杂的戏剧情节,却有大量的为观众喜爱的俏皮话、双关语,和在现实生活中常挂在人们口头的那些成语、谚语。整个作品渗透着一股接近于民间文学的清新气息。

《爱的徒劳》是一出宫廷戏,情节十分简单。一位国王很喜好学问,接受他的几个同学的建议,定了一个规章,规定大家三年之内一心读书,任何女子不得进入宫廷一里之内,三年之内,他们不得与任何女子交谈。这个可笑的规章当然刚刚定出就被违反了,他们一个接一个地背弃了自己的誓言。因为现实世界是生动活泼的,书本和誓言禁锢不了她。便是国王,不久就接待了一位端庄美丽的姑娘,法国国王的女儿。在年轻人中,爱情是免不了的。

正如剧中人物俾隆在一次长篇大论中说的,恋爱是合法的,谁也禁止不了。大家发誓发愤读书,却抛弃了各自的一本最宝贵的书籍,从女人的眼睛可以得到最好的教训,那是艺术的经典,知识的宝库,世上没有一个作家能够像一个女人的眼睛一样把那么多的美丽启示给读者。一切沉闷的学术都局限于脑海之中。吃尽苦头,收获甚微,而学会恋爱就不一样了,它不会被禁锢在心里,它会随着周身的血液,像思想一般迅速地走遍全身,使每一个器官发挥出双倍的效能。恋人眼中的光芒能使猛鹰眩目,恋人的耳朵听得出最微细的声音,恋人的感觉比戴壳蜗牛的触角还要微妙灵敏;恋人的舌头使善于辨味的酒神显得迟钝;论勇力爱情不是像大力士赫拉克勒斯一般,永远在乐园里爬树想摘下金苹果?像人面狮身的斯芬克斯一样狡猾;当爱情发言的时候,就像诸神的合唱,使整个的世界陶醉于仙乐之中,诗人怎敢提笔抒写他的诗篇,除非他的墨水里调和着爱情的叹息。有了爱情他的诗句就会感动野蛮的猛兽,激发暴君的天良。女人的眼睛永远闪耀智慧的神火,是艺术的经典,知识的宝库,装饰、涵容、滋养整个世界,没有它们,一切都会失去它们的美妙……经过这样的鼓动,国王立即下命令,要大家不管什么誓约,赶紧冲锋陷阵,不耽误每一秒钟。

尽管除爱情之外,世上还有许多美好的事,这里对爱情的赞美,也许有些过热,但这本来就是热烈的事情,冷淡的评价是毫无意趣的。理智和情感同样有价值,难题是怎样达到平衡——但追求平衡的人本身就已经有些冷了。所以像那个国王,在一开始就是在违心地追求平衡和理智。

莎士比亚在这出戏中:常常是不平衡的,不时达到一种激昂亢进的状态,他的语言的潮流,带着爱情的细语或呼啸,滚滚流淌,读之让人快意。我们不必担心这对于舞台演出,对戏剧情节发展的节奏会有妨碍。最难得的恰就是这种该平稳沉静时平稳沉静,该激昂亢奋就激昂亢奋,而不是刻意雕琢,跟自然的法则、性情的法则对着干。

从剧中大量运用排比修辞手段的对白中可以约略看出莎士比亚在这出戏里对于语言的讲究。他明显地受了约翰·李雷绮丽体的影响,使用叠句和押韵的诗体对话,时常穿插些诗歌。有人把这个作品称为“一场语言的芭蕾”,表现了莎士比亚的语言天赋。这些华美的文辞在译成中文后,虽然有些掉色走味,但仍然华丽流畅。俾隆反对国王的规章时说道:为什么要我喜爱流产的婴儿?我不愿冰雪遮掩了五月的花天锦地,也不希望蔷薇花在圣诞节含娇弄媚,万物都各自有它生长的季节,太早太迟同样是过犹不及。是的,万物有时,莎士比亚在早期戏剧中这种语言试验不是徒劳的。我们知道在中国文学史上,初唐曾有王杨卢骆四杰,文风受六朝绮丽的影响,曾遭到很多的反对,甚至被贬得不值一哂,但唐代伟大的诗人杜甫对他们的评价很高,有一首诗写道:“王杨卢骆当时体,轻薄为文哂未休。尔曹名与身俱灭,不废江河万古流。”见识之通达,是许多人所不及的。

读这一喜剧,使人感受到一股清新的民间文学的气息。试以第四幕第三景为例。国王和他的三个大臣,一个个身不由己坠入爱河,一个个念着自己偷写的情诗上场,一个个先后躲起来偷听,又先后跳出来,口是心非地指责对方违背禁欲苦修的誓言。最后跳出来的是俾隆,三个人都被他取笑一番,却冷不防自己的情书无意中给暴露了,结果同样的只落得取笑他人而又被取笑。原来这四个是彼此彼此的难兄难弟!剧作家用喜剧性的夸张手法,一再让“螳螂捕蝉,黄雀在后”的尴尬场面重复出现,一个笑料引出另一个笑料,使人联想到我国的民间小戏《打面缸》。两者风格各异,喜剧手法却有异曲同工之妙。

把笑声和讽刺紧密地结合在一起,是自古希腊罗马以来一脉相承的古典喜剧的传统。喜剧的社会功能向来被认为是对于坏人坏事的讥笑和讽刺。莎士比亚却在一个新的时代里,为他的一系列喜剧开拓了一个新的境界,显示出一种新的精神面貌。在他的喜剧里荡漾着富于青春气息的笑声。讽刺和讥笑这批评的武器并没有被抛弃(在这喜剧里,对于装腔作势的亚马多,对于荒谬可笑的禁欲主义),可是最有感染力的笑声来自对于现实生活的热爱和赞美。在《爱的徒劳》里突出地表现为对于流转在人民口头上的活生生的语言持欣赏的态度,那几乎就是对于现实生活持欣赏态度,是热爱现实生活的一种表现。这里也就体现着莎士比亚的喜剧精神。

尽管莎士比亚的这个早期喜剧在艺术上还存在着不足之处,例如人物的内心世界还不是很丰满,性格上有类型化的倾向;在语言的选用上还有很多程序化的地方(这和夸张的艺术手法分不开),韵诗多达550行,等等;但单就剧作家通过他所喜爱的主要人物之口,表达了对语言艺术的独到见解,看重口语化的本色美,莎士比亚可说给自己的剧作打上了鲜明的、不容任意抹掉的印记。

《爱的徒劳》这一个轻歌剧般的喜剧,有的是说笑打闹,谈不上深刻的哲理思想,不过它鲜明的时代感还是值得谈一下。在黑暗的中世纪,天主教会在整个欧洲建立起一个组织严密、机构庞大的宗教王国,为了对人民实行精神上的统治,利用一切欺骗的手段,唤起人们对于天堂的幸福的幻想;向往身后进入天国,抛弃现实生活中的一切享受,忍饥挨饿、禁欲苦修。在这个喜剧里,那瓦国王和他的三个大臣宣誓三年内每天斋戒、忏悔、苦修,而且三年中不许和妇女见一面、交谈一句话。这就是天主教会不遗余力宣扬的禁欲主义。

但是时光不能倒流,人们的精神面貌在一个新的历史时期(欧洲文艺复兴时期)发生了极大的变化,在先进的人文主义思想的不断冲击下,禁欲主义早已不得人心了。那瓦国王宣誓斋戒苦修,只不过是历史上的禁欲主义的一种遥远的回声、一种封建旧思想的残余罢了。时过境迁,它不可能卷土重来了;面目可憎的禁欲主义又像幽灵般出现在这里,在莎士比亚的作品里,恐怕只是仅有一次,从此成为绝响了。写此剧的两个多世纪前(14世纪中叶),现代文明的曙光开始照临欧洲的土地上。文艺复兴时期的先驱卜伽丘曾经以他的笔作为武器,像是短兵相接地向天主教会的禁欲主义这个庞然大物发起猛烈的批判;两个多世纪后,光景不同了,在莎士比亚笔下,国王宣誓信奉的禁欲主义成了不攻自破的纸老虎,只是被嘲弄一番,给喜剧平添许多笑料而已,更好的是,竖立起这一个对立面作为活靶子,话题就来了,时代的气息加强了,这喜剧因之点缀了不少谙熟的、来自现实生活的人生智慧。

虽然这个剧本并没有多大的社会意义,但技术上并不粗糙,它带着那种符合宫廷审美标准的古典的对称和和谐。作者在安排人物、安排情节、运用语言方面都极讲究,典雅与粗卑,热情、朝气蓬勃与老气横秋相互衬托,错落有致。其中一个很有意思的角色是来自西班牙的会逗笑的小丑亚马多,他不但妙语联珠,常用漂亮的双关语和比喻,而且近墨者黑,在那些学者型的国王廷臣面前,他也极力掉文,满口胡诌些文言,但总是啰啰唆唆,夹缠不清。

一派胡说!黑色是地狱的象征,囚牢的幽暗,暮夜的阴沉;美貌应该像天色一样清明。
