Chapter 12　Political Parties and Elections

The United States has a two-party system.Only the two major parties，Democrats and Republicans，have the chance to win the general election and control of Congress.In 1874，Thomas Nast，an American famous cartoonist，drew a political picture with a donkey representing Democrats and an elephant representing Republicans.From then on，donkey and elephant became the emblems of the two parties.The Republican Party is also called the Grand Old Party（GOP）.
