Theodore Roosevelt(1858-1919)

With the emergence of industrial America came the emergence of imperial America and the United States as a world power. The growing industrial might of the nation was reflected clearly in the US mad policy of aggression and expansion abroad. In 1898,the first imperialist war,the US-Spanish War,broke out.The war marked a new stage in which the US transformed into an imperialist power. From this time the US began its modern history. The war was quickly fought and won by the US.The peace treaty gave Puerto Rico,Guam, and the Philippines to the US.And Cuba became independent, but remained

subject to close American control. The US-Spanish War was but a beginning in world wide US aggression.

By the early years of the 20th century,Theodore Roosevelt who became President in 1901carried out the aggressive policy in most faithful and open manner.Wielding the“Big Stick”in the name of the“Monroe Doctrine”,he carried out the policy of aggression in Latin America and brought most of the Caribbean countries under US control.During Theodore Roosevelt’s administration,he got the control of Panama Canal. In Sino-American relations,Theodore Roosevelt pushed the so-called“Open Door Policy”which demanded that all the imperialist powers should enjoy equal chance in China as freely as other aggressors. In 1900,America joined the Eight-Power Alliance to suppress the anti-imperialist Boxers Movement of the Chinese people. They forced the Qing Government to sign another unequal treaty in 1901and to pay a large sum of money by way of indemnity.America got from the spoils its dividend of the 24million dollars.

As the 20th century dawned, the United States had emerged as a major influence in world affairs. It really became a fully trust imperialist country then.

Note

Andrew Johnson(1808-1875):The 17th US president(1865-1869),a Democrat,he was born in North Carolina, and moved to Tennessee in 1826.He never spent a day in school and was apprenticed to a tailor at age of 10.He was elected to the state legislature, the governorship, the House of Representatives(1843-1853),and the Senate(1857-1862).He was the only southern senator to remain loyal to the Union during the Civil War.As Lincoln’s running mate,he was elected vice-president in 1864,and became President upon Lincoln’s death in 1865.
