Lesson 50(A) Complaining of Short Delivery(B) An Adjustment Made by the Shipping Company
I. About the letter:
Letter A was w ritten to the Shipping Company by the shipper. It complains of a short delivery of two cases. From this letter we can see that it is important to make sure of everything beforemaking a complaint. The key to success is to be thorough-going in establishing and proving facts.
Letter B is a reply to the previous letter. It is an adjustmentmade by the shipping company. After investigation,the w riter finds the shippers'complaint justified. He then admits it readily,expresses his regret and promises to put it right.

1. complaint n.不满,抱怨,申诉
complaints and claims抱怨和索赔,申诉与索赔

Any complaint about the quality of the products should be lodged w ithin 15 days after their arrival.

2. over-carry v.越载,超载
over-(前缀)过多,超过
此前缀应用广泛,多用于名词、动词及形容词之前。外贸中过去分词前加over的不少,但应注意他们有时是一个词,如overdue,overlanded;有时中间用连字符,如over-invoiced;有时甚至写成两个词,如over delivered。
3. depart v.走开;(船只)离开
We departed for Shanghai at2:00 p.m.
我们下午两点动身前往上海。
As the only direct steamer which calls at our port once a month has just departed,the goods can only be shipped nextmonth.
由于一个月停靠一次我港的唯一一艘直达轮已于一个月前离开,货物只能下个月发运。

The first available steamer is scheduled for departure on August10.

4. tallyman n.(又称tallyclerk)船上计酬员,理货员
tally vi.吻合,符合(常接w ith)

日期为2月28日、号码为19号提单的收货人科伦坡Bombey&Sons公司来函反映,“Baltrover”轮由黄埔装往科伦坡的100箱货物中少了两箱。
收货人曾就此事同你方在科伦坡的代理人联系过,你方代理人告诉他直接向我方查询此事。
事实所在,提单很清楚地表明是清洁无瑕的,100箱在装运时货物完整,外表情况良好。同样情况也明显地显示在我方的装货单及你方的收货单上,因此很明显,错误在于你方。如此事俟后得到证实,我方保留向你方对此短交提出索赔的权利。

事实经过是这样的,“Baltrover”轮为了避过退潮,在预定开航时间数小时前离开了科伦坡。在海关官员的监督下,我们船上的理货员匆匆忙忙地盖好船盖,货物原封未动。假如这两箱货没有和整批货物分开存放,我们就能把这批货全数交给收货人了。对于因迟交可能给你方以及收货人造成的麻烦我们深表歉意。
