Lesson 18 (A) A Repeat Order(B) Declining a Repeat Order
I. About the letters:
A repeatorder is an order for a further or additional quantity of the goods previously ordered. The price and quantity may be different from the previous order. In case an order is placed on the same terms and conditionsas the previous one—w ith the exception of the time of shipment,which is somewhat different,—it is called a duplicate order.
The first letter given in this lesson is a letter from the buyers sending a repeatorder. But from the context,it seems that it is in fact a letter for a duplicate order,i. e. they take it for granted that the goodsw ill be supplied at the same price. In the letter only a request for early shipment is mentioned. The seller of coursemay accept the order either at the same price ormake a firm offer at a revised price. He may also refuse to accept it. The second letter is one from the seller declining the repeat order.
II. Additional notes:
1. the captioned shipment标题所指船货
Here the“shipment”means“goods shipped”.
2. ex(Latin)= from prep.从
In foreign trade,we use“ex”for imports and“per”for exports. Please be advised that the goods shipped per s. s.“Daqing”have arrived in good condition.
3. s.s—abbreviation of steamship轮船
Although modern ships are driven by diesel engines,gasoline engines instead of steam engines(known as M/V=motor vessel),yet“S.S”,is still in use and may be used for any oceangoing vessel. The abbreviation may be w ritten as: S.S.; s.s.; s/s or S/S.
4. repeat order续订的订单,续订的货物这里repeat是名词作定语,本义是“重复”,商业上作“再订”,“续订”解。

repeat order与原订单除装运期不同外,价格与数量甚至详细规格亦未必相同。假定除装运期不同外,其他一切条件完全相同,则称为duplicate order(重复订单)。动词repeat本意是“重说”,“重做”,商业上作“续卖”,“再供应”解。

5. book n./v.账册;把……记载入册
1) book sb's order是“把向某人订妥的记载入册”,也就是“卖给某人”等于accept sb's order。
2) book with sb. sth.是“把向某人订妥的记载入册”,也就是“向某人购进”,等于place w ith sb. an order。
6. commitment n.所承诺的事,所承担的责任
We have notmade any commitment in this respect.
在这方面我们没有做过任何保证。
Ow ing to heavy commitments,we cannot accept fresh business at present.
由于承约过多,我们目前不能接受新的任务。
We have too many commitments to allow us to take on new orders.
