Lesson 14 Persuading the Buyer to Accept the Offer

I. About the letter:

A fter receiving the counter-offer from the buyer,the seller found it quite unrealistic to close the deal on such terms. The seller declined the offer by telling the prevailing market conditions in order to persuade the buyer to accept the previous offer.

II. Additional notes:

1. persuade v.说服

1) to persuade sb. to do sth.

We regretwe have not been able to persuade the end-users to accept a substitution.

2) to persuade sb. into+ gerund

We regretwe have not been able to persuade the end-users into accepting a substituation.

We are trying to persuade them to buy/into buying a trial shipment.

2. while: subordinating conj.虽然introducing an adverbial clause of concession having the same meaning as“although”(引出让步状语,含有“对照”或相反的意思)

While we appreciate your order,we very much regret that the quality reguired is in short supply.(虽然,尽管)

= Although/in spite of the fact thatwe appreciate your order...

While we admit that the problem is difficult,we don't agree that they cannot be solved.

(We may change the complex sentence into a compound one,e.g.We appreciate your cooperation...but(we) regret to say....The compound sentence is lessm ild in tone than the complex one.)

3. entertain v.考虑(引申为可接受)

They cannot entertain your proposal because it does not seem workable.

They would not entertain any price lower than RM B 500 per ton.

Ourmanager entertained the guest to dinner.

Note the difference among:entertain,consider,and accept.

entertain= ready to consider

accept= consent to sb.offered

consider= think about sth.

4. abovementioned ph.a.上述的

也可写作:

above-mentioned

the abovementioned article(s)

the article(s) mentioned above

加上定冠词可作名词:the above-mentioned

above-mentioned的反义词为:under-mentioned

也可写作:undermentioned

5. ruling a.现行的

ruling price与current price,going price,present price,prevailing price及prevalent price等意思基本相同,中文均为现行价格。

The ruling/prevailing price remain strong.

Their ruling price for thismaterial is...

他们这种材料的现行价格是……

6. There is very little likelihood of...没有可能……

likelihood= probability= possibility

There is no/little likelihood of our being able to better the price.

我们没有可能在价格上再作让步。

In all likelihood,orders for these productswill increase.

对此类商品的订货十有八九要增加。

7. foreseeable a.可以预见的

We do not think business prospects are unfavorable in the foreseeable future.

8. in your interest为了你方的利益

类似的表达方式还有:

This suggestions ismade in your interest concerned.

9. w ithout(any) delay尽快地,立即

类似的表达方式还有:

The soonest possible/as soon as possible.

We would suggest that you accept our offer w ithout any delay.

We have to point out that your counter-offer is obviously on the low side. The pricewe offered is entirely in line w ith themarket level and has been acceptted by many customers.

However,we now agree in your interest to renew our offer till the end of this month and recommend that you cable us your confirmation without delay.
