本片以智商仅75的阿甘来观看世界，透过它单纯的思想以及善良的个性，描绘出美国50年代至90年代的历史，虽然40年间，美国历史有急剧的变化，但是弱智的阿甘突破智能的限制，以一贯的真诚和天生的直觉行动，反倒开创出自己的一片天地。

(Years passed, Forrest obtained success in many fields. Then, one day his mother calls him, wanting to see him.)

F: What’s the matter momma?

Mother: It’s my time. It’s just my time. Oh, don’t be afraid, sweetheart. 1) Death is just a part of life. Something we are all destined to do. I didn’t know it, but I was destined to be your momma. I did the best I could.

F: You did good, momma.

Mother: Well. I happen to believe you make your own destiny. 2) You have to do the best with what God gave you.

F: What’s my destiny, momma?

Mother: You’re gonna have to figure that out for yourself. Life is a box of chocoloates, Forrest. You never know what you’re gonna get.

F: 3) Momma always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.

Mother: I will miss you, Forrest.

F: She had got the cancer, and died on a Tuesday. 4) I bought her a new hat with little flowers on it.

F: Now because I’d been a football star, a war hero and a national celebrity1 and a shrimping2 boat captain and a college graduate, these city folks of Greensboro Alabama decided to get together and offered me a fine job. So I never went back to work for Lieutenant Dan, though he did take care of my Bubba Gump money. He got me invested3 in some kind of fruit company. So then I got a call from him saying “we don’t have to worry about money no more.” and I said: “That’s good. One less thing.” 5) Now Momma said there is only so much fortune a man really needs and the rest is just for showing off. So I gave a whole bunch of it to the Forrest Square Gospel Church. And I gave a whole Fishing Hospital. And even though Bubba was dead and Lieutenant Dan said I was nuts4, I gave Bubba’s momma Bubba’s share. You know what? She didn’t have to work in nobody’s kitchen no more. And cause I was a god zillionaire5 and I like doing it so much, I cut that grass for free. But at night time when there was nothing to do and the house was all empty, I’d always think of Jenny.
