玛利亚活泼热情的性格和修道院生活难以相容，于是她被院长派去给一个退役的海军上校的七个孩子当家庭教师。她以真诚的爱心换到了孩子们的认同，并教他们认识了音乐和生活的乐趣。与此同时上校的冷漠也被玛利亚的柔情融化了。为了逃避对上校的感情，玛利亚回到修道院，但在院长的鼓励下，她决定还是回到萨尔斯堡，回到上校和孩子们的身边。
