China's township enterprises have developed on the basis of the handicrafts industry and the processing of agricultural products and by-products.They have flourished since 1978,becoming themainstays of the rural economy.In 1999,2,500 billion yuan in industrial output value was produced by the township enterprises,and the value of exported commodities came to 720 billion yuan.Now there aremore than 20 million township enterprises in China,having 125 million employees.Township enterprises are involved in industry,agriculture and transportation,along with the building,commerce,and catering trades.They produce a variety of goods,from products needed in agriculture to daily necessities,foodstuffs,sideline products and light industrialmaterials.Many of these products are exported.

The NewYork Stock Exchange(NYSE)on Monday kicked off its trading session with a special ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.Stephen A.Orlins,president of the U.S.National Committee on U.S.-China Relations(NCUSCR),rang the market's Opening Bell.China's UN permanent representative Zhang Yesui and former Secretary of United States Dr.Henry Kissinger also attended the ceremony.

People who want to help out at the 2010 ShanghaiWorld Expo can sign up to become volunteers starting May 1.

Foreigners,seniors and even the physically challenged can apply to take part in theWorld Fair,the Expo organizer said yesterday.

Around 70,000 volunteers will be recruited to work inside the Expo site and another 100,000 to staff more than 1,000 service centers around the city during the event.Each volunteer must agree to work at least a total of 14 days at the Expo,which starts on May 1,2010,and will last184 days.Volunteers who work inside the site must be at least18 years old,and those outside should be older than 16.There is no upper limit on age.Volunteersmust be in good health and agree to take part in training prior to their service.
