Passage 1

本篇报道解释了什么是温室效应、温室效应是如何产生的以及其对地球气温乃至地球今后气候变化的影响。这类报道紧扣热点问题，也较详细，不同于一般的快讯或消息。可以在练习时体会这类新闻的用词特点。

People who live in cold areas sometimes grow flowers and other plants in buildings with glass tops and sides．The glass lets the sunlight enter to make the building warmand it stops the heat fromescaping．People call such buildings green houses．Scientists use the same word to describe a similar situation in the earth's atmosphere．

The green house effect is believed to be produced when fuel is burned in earth．The burning produces carbon dioxide gas which rises into the air．If there is enough carbon dioxide gas，scientists say，it can actmuch like the glass tops and sides of agreen house．It can let sunlight shine through to warmthe earth's surface and then act like a cover to prevent heat fromescaping．

Some scientists say high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could produce some very serious effects on earth．They have warned that a continuous increase in the use of such fuels as oil，coal and wood could make the earth more than 4 degrees warmer in the next 60 years．This would be warmenough to melt the ice at the North and South Poles．All this extra water would raise ocean levels，and flood the world's coastal cities．

China's central bank yesterday proposed replacing the US dollar as the international reserve currency with a newglobal systemcontrolled by the International Monetary Fund．

In an essay posted on the People's Bank of China website，Zhou Xiaochuan，the central bank's governor，said the goal would be to create a reserve currency“that is disconnected fromindividual nations and is able to remain stable in the long run，thus removing the inherent deficiencies caused by using credit-based nationalcurrencies”．

Analysts said the proposal was an indication of Beijing's fears that actions being taken to save the domestic US economy would have a negative impact on China．
