Passage 1
I amhonored to be with you today at your commencement fromone of the finest universities in the world.I never graduated fromcollege.Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation.Today I want to tell you three stories frommy life. That's it.No big deal.Just three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots.
I dropped outof Reed College after the first6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit.So why did I drop out?
It started before I was born.My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to putme up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates,so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife.Except that when I popped out they decided at the lastminute that they really wanted a girl.So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking:“We have an unexpected baby boy;do you want him?”They said:“Of course.”My biological mother laterfound out that my mother had never graduated fromcollege and that my father had never graduated fromhigh school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a fewmonths later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents'savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months,I couldn't see the value in it.I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure itout. And here I was spending all of themoneymy parents had saved their entire life.So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work outOK.It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interestme, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
Passage 2
Passage 3
For eight years,it has been my honor to serve as your President. The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence—a time set apart.Tonight, with a thankful heart,I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts on the journey we have traveled together and the future of our Nation.
Five days fromnow, the world will witness the vitality of American democracy. In a tradition dating back to our founding, the presidency will pass to a successor chosen by you,the American people.Standing on the steps of the Capitol will be a man whose story reflects the enduring promise of our land. This is a moment of hope and pride for our whole Nation. And I join all Americans in offering best wishes to President—elect Obama, his wife Michelle, and their two beautiful girls.
Tonight I amfilled with gratitude—to Vice PresidentCheney and members of the Administration;to Laura, who brought joy to this house and love to my life;to our wonderful daughters,Barbara and Jenna;to my parents, whose examples have provided strength for a lifetime. And above all,I thank the American people for the trust you have given me.I thank you for the prayers that have lifted my spirits. And I thank you for the countless acts of courage, generosity, and grace that I have witnessed these past eight years.
This evening,my thoughts return to the first night I addressed you from this house—September 11,2001.Thatmorning,terrorists took nearly 3,000 lives in the worst attack on America since Pearl Harbor.I remember standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center three days later, surrounded by rescuers who had been working around the clock.I remember talking to brave souls who charged through smokefilled corridors at the Pentagon and to husbands and wives whose loved ones becameheroes aboard Flight 93.I remember Arlene Howard, who gave me her fallen son's police shield as a reminder of all that was lost. And I still carry his badge.
Passage 4

Passage 8
That iswhy I amso glad to be in Beijing today, and to have the chance to speak not only to your government but also to you here,in one of China's great centers of innovation and creative thought. You young educated people have so much to contribute to development, and to meeting the global challenges that I have spoken about safeguarding world peace and security, developing friendly relations amongpeoples of different faith or culture, and achieving the MillenniumDevelopment Goals.
You already have a well-developed network of solidarity between richer and poorer regions within China, and I knowmany of you will be serving in poor areas, after you graduate.I hope some of you will think also about serving in other parts of the world, where your skillsmay be even more desperately needed.
I urge you all and your contemporaries throughoutChina to commit yourselves to finding answers to our century's great challenges of poverty, disease, and environmental degradation.I say to you,as I have said to students in the United States, and many other countries,go out and make the world better!
But I have spoken long enough. Now it's your turn.If you have questions,I will try to answer them. But I hope youmay also have comments,so that I can learn from you.
Thank you very much.
