Unit 18 Saying Goodbye

As someone says ‘‘Every goodbye makes the next hello closer.’’When planning to leave your current job remember this one rule, “how you finish is just as important as how you start”, therefore finish well and exit gracefully. They say that first impressions count, we should also add that final impressions are lasting. While working with our partners together, we tend to focus on all the factors that will win us respect, influence, favor, power, acceptance and inclusion with others. These factors are important and helpful when starting a new job, a project, networking, or selling.

But what happens when the project is over or you are ready to leave a job. How do you make your exit work to your benefit? Your exit can be beneficial in many ways such as

a good character reference;

a door opener for another project;

easing transitions from one job to another;

winning you instant respect and creditability;

landing a new client;

leaving a legacy of your contributions.

We can exit gracefully from a job or volunteer organization by doing some preparations that will make our exit smooth and impressions last.

Handle your departure as carefully as you would handle any other business endeavor. It’s always wise not to burn bridges, because you don’t know when you will need your past partners for a new business.

Situational Dialogues

Dialogue 1

Mr. Zhang, manager of XYZ Company is seeing Mr. Johnson off at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.

Johnson: Thanks for seeing me off at the airport, Mr. Zhang.

Zhang: It’s my pleasure. I really hope you are satisfied with all that we’ve done for you during your stay here.

Johnson: Sure. You are so kind and hospitable and this is a very pleasant business trip. I really appreciate what you have done for me.

Zhang: Do you think the trip fruitful?

Johnson: Oh, yes. Through this trip, I am getting more and more interested in your products and company. And I will submit my report to our company as soon as I go back.

Zhang: I am glad you had a chance to visit our headquarters, and hope you can come back soon.

Johnson: If everything goes well, I should be back in about two weeks. Will you be here at that time?

Zhang: I should be. Remember to let me know when you come, I will come and pick you up.

Zhang: Here we are at the terminal. Air China is in terminal B, the international terminal. Walk straight ahead and you can see the check-in counter on your left.

Mr. Liu and his assistance Miss Li are saying goodbye to Mr. Washington at the airport.

Liu: Now, it’s 8:30. We arrived just on time.

Washington: Ok. I think I have to buy the departure tax.

Wang: Really? I’m glad to hear that.

Tips for Checking in at the Airport

When seeing off your friends or clients at the airport, you may have to know some rules about checking in there. It can be helpful for your future friendship and cooperation.

Get to the airport

Go to the Check-in Counter with your Ticket and Luggage. It should be very easy to find. If you can’t find it, don’t be afraid to ask.

The person at the check-in counter will check your ticket and verify it with your ID or your passport. They are also going to take your luggage and put it on the conveyor belt. For those who don’t know what that is: it’s a rolling thing that carries your luggage to where they will be x-raying it and getting it ready to put on your plane.

They are going to give you a gate number where you are going to board your flight. Again, don’t be afraid to ask for directions if you need to.

Before you get to your boardings gate, you’re going to pass through a security check and a Customs check. While you walk through the security check, you should place your carry-on bag in a x-ray machine. As soon as it passes through, you can get it back.

Proceed to your gate. At the gate there’s going to be a whole bunch of seats, you will wait there until someone calls your flight.

When your flight is called you’re going to take your ticket, ID and, carry-on bag to the person that is going to take your ticket. Then you will proceed onto the plane and you can find your seat number that’s noted on your ticket.

Now you’re ready to fly!
