B: I’m allergic to garlic, so that’s definitely out. And I’m not keen on hot peppers.

A: I got it, my friend. (Turning to the waiter) Do you have any specials today?

C: We have sweet and sour fish today. Would you like to have a try?

B: Yes, I have heard the sweet and sour fish is very popular here.

B: Great! It is of typical Chinese and said to be the most delicious food in the world.

Cultural Differences

Everything from greeting to eating could make you embarrassed or even dangerous even though you have the best intentions. Look out for the following cultural mistakes and try to avoid them while meeting new friends or going abroad.

1. Touching someone

Where it is offensive: Korea, Thailand, China, Europe, the Middle East.

What’s offensive: Personal space varies as you travel the globe. In Mediterranean countries, if you refrain from touching someone’s arm when talking to them or if you don’t greet them with kisses or a warm embrace, you’ll be considered cold. But you’ll make people uncomfortable by backslapping them who is not your good friend or family member. In Thailand, the head is considered sacred—never pat a child on the head.

What you should do: Observe what locals are doing and follow them. Please remember that sometimes touching and public displays of affection are unacceptable. In places like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, men and women are forbidden from interacting, let alone touching.

2. Blowing your nose

Where it is offensive: Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, France.

What’s offensive: Some cultures find it disgusting to blow your nose in public—especially at the table. The Japanese and Chinese are also repelled by the idea of a handkerchief.

What you should do: Leave the hankies at home and use disposable tissues instead. In France as well as in Eastern countries, if you’re dining and need to blow your nose, excuse yourself and head to the restroom.

Once you are meeting new friends or coming into contact with a different culture, remain highly sensitive to your behaviors. After all, this is a global village, and we are very different.
