As most of us know from experience,human communication systems seldom preform optimally.A variety of external factors can distort messages and their meaning,inhibiting comprehension and mutual understanding.Distortions can occur in any individual elements comprising the communication process.For example individual communicators each have their goals and objectives,things they want to accomplish.The more diverse the goals of the two parties,the greater the likelihood that distortions and errors in communication will occur.Humans are unique in their ability to use symbols to deliver messages—primarily written or spoken language.The more prone we are to using symbolic communication,the more likely it is that the symbols we choose may not accurately communicate the meaning we intend.Distortions are also likely if the sender encodes the message in a way that impede reception or accurate interpretation by the recipient.Channels and media are the means through which information is sent and received.The choices available to communicators exist at a couple of different levels,making it “the media is the message”.
