S:Thank you very much. It’s a pleasure to have an opportunity to come to China.

I:Mr.Lin has come to make sure that your stay in Beijing is a pleasant one.

S:Why,thank you. You’re going out of your way for us,I believe.

L:Not at all. After all,it’s your first trip here and we’d like you to feel at home.If there’s anything special you want, you can always tell the interpreter here.

S:Thank you.The room service here is quite good and we like the food.

L:I’m glad you find the hotel service satisfactory.

S:Yes,we do.

I:By the way,Mr.Smith and Mr.Thompson,Mr.Lin has a few things he’d like to talk over with you.

S:By all means.

L:It’s just the matter of the schedule, that is,if it is convenient for you right now.

S:Why not? No better time than now.

L:I understand that Mr.Watson of your party has not arrived yet. When do you expect him?

S:He has booked his flight for the 14th.I think we can draw up a tentative plan now.If Mr.Watson wants to make any changes, minor alterations can be made then. Will that suit you?

L:Fine.Let’s go over the itinerary now.

T:Well.Mr.Smith,I’m sure Mr.Watson wouldn’t mind a day of sightseeing as our hosts have taken all the trouble to arrange things.

S:Well,in that case...

T:Mr.Lin,were you thinking of any particular place you wanted to take us to?

L:Well,we had the Summer Palace in mind.

T:The summer residence of the Empress Dowager? That would be nice. We’ve heard so much about it.How about it,Mr.Smith?

S:Sure,I’m all for it now that you’ve got me interested. But is there any way of ensuring we’ll have enough time for our talks?

L:Well,so long as we know what each other’s requirements are and we don’t get bogged down on details.I’m sure the talks will progress as planned.

T:Well, for our part,we’ll try all our efforts to make everything smooth sailing.

L:Thank you.If all goes well we’ll be able to wind up our talks the day after tomorrow.

S:I hope so.Anyway we’ll do our best.
