Lily:That’s right.People go abroad for different purposes:some for leisure,some for business,and some for other purposes.

Joe:I plan to have a trip to China.How shall I make preparations?

Lily:First,you have to apply for a passport at the Foreign Office.After that,you’re supposed to get a visa from the Chinese Embassy.

Joe:I heard that in order to get a visa,I had to fill out some forms.

Lily:Yes,there will be many items.The following items are the major ones:your first name,gender,marital status,physical features,date and place of birth,present address,purpose of travel,proposed date of departure,proposed period of stay,source of support,etc.

Joe:Thank you.I think I have to do some preparations in advance.

Lily:Yes,then you should give all the related materials to the visa officers.They will inform you as soon as they get the result.When do you prepare to depart?

Joe:I plan to depart in one month.How long will it take to get the visa?

Lily:It will take about two or three weeks.

Joe:I really appreciate your help.

1.The airport,formerly named Shuangguisi Airport,opened as an auxiliary military airfield in 1938 during the World WarⅡ.

2.Complete and advanced facilities and services are available in both terminals,including international and domestic transfer,VIP lounge,banks,dining,shopping,recreation and other dedicated services.

This is the check-in hall and will be the first queue you will encounter.There is a queuing system which may appear strange at first because it is not a straight line of people.

Passengers are guided through a winding line through the queuing section.There can be a significant wait so you may wish to provide some quiet entertainment or activity to pass the time.Also make sure you have made a visit to the toilet if necessary before you join the queue.You may have arranged for escorted assistance from OCS and this could include being taken to the front of the queue.Checking-in is the process for confirming that you are prepared for the flight,where your flight documents are checked and where you will be issued with a boarding pass in order to get on the plane later.This is also where you will drop off large luggage that will be put on the plane for you into its cargo section.This luggage will be weighed and confirmed as being below the limit set for your journey.If your luggage weighs more than this limit,you may be asked to pay an additional charge.Your luggage will pass through to an area behind the checking desks to be taken to the plane.You will be allowed to take hand luggage onto the plane with you.But again,the amount,size and weight will be limited.Importantly,there are restrictions on what items are allowed to be taken on the plane with you in your hand luggage as well as any loose items you may carry.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers take the arrival process very seriously.We are responsible for everyone’s safety and security.Because security is so important,your immigration status may be subject to further review,or you may have your baggage or personal items inspected.This is a routine process to ensure the integrity of our nation’s immigration,customs,and agriculture laws.During every step,you are free to ask questions of any of our officers.So let’s get started.CBP wants to get you on your way.Pay close attention to the officer to speed the process.Place your documents inside the front cover of your passport with the CBP declaration form.When it is your turn,a CBP officer will call you to the counter to review your documents,perform queries in the computer system and interview you regarding details of your visit to the United States or your trip abroad.

Some of the questions we may ask are:

Officer:What’s the purpose of your trip today?

Traveler:I’m coming for a business conference.

Officer:How long will you be in the United States?

Narrator:Be ready to answer questions.Pay close attention to the officer to speed the process.As a visitor,you are required to have your photo and fingerprints taken.

Officer:Can you take your glasses off for a photo,please? Thank you.

Narrator:You may be asked some additional questions.

Officer:Where are you coming from right now?

Traveler:From England.

Narrator:If you have anything to declare,including purchases or food products of any kind,make sure to inform the CBP officer.

Officer:Do you have any foods,meats,vegetables,alcohol,tobacco?

Traveler:One bottle of whiskey.

Narrator:Everyone must declare all merchandise to include gifts and food and plant products you are bringing into the United States.This includes US citizens and legal residents who must declare all items they purchased while abroad.Failure to declare these items can result in fines,penalties,and seizure of those items.If you are carrying an I-94 form,take a moment to be sure all of the information is correct,and your departure date is clearly marked by a CBP officer.It will be stapled to your passport.Don’ t lose it.You will need to turn it in when departing the United States.
