Passage One

本短文三道题选项中的parents to enforce bedtime, students to rise early和get up early表明,短文可能与学生作息时间有关。

A Brown University sleep researcher has some advice for people who run high schools:Don’t start classes so early in the morning. It may not be that the students who nod off at their desks are lazy. And it may not be that their parents have failed to enforce bedtime.Instead,it may be biologically that these sleepyhead students aren’t used to the early hour.

“Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies,”says Mary Carskadon,a professor looking at problems of teenage sleep at Brown’s School of Medicine.

Carskadon is trying to understand more about the effects of early school time on teenagers. And at a more basic level, she and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of teenagers affect sleep needs and patterns.

Carskadon says her work suggests that teenagers may need more sleep than they did at childhood, not less,as commonly thought.

Sleep patterns change during teenage,as any parent of a teenager can prove. Most teenagers prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But it’s not just a matter of choice—their bodies are going through a change of sleep patterns.

All of this makes the transfer from middle school to high school—which may start one hour earlier in the morning—all the more difficult,Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the“sleep late, rise late”pattern, teenagers are up against difficulties when it comes to trying to be up by 5 or 6 am for a 7:30 am first bell.A short sleep on a desktop may be their body’s way of saying,“I need a timeout.”

16.Why does Carskadon suggest that high schools should not start classes so early in the morning?

短文中提到“Instead,it may be biologically that these sleepyhead students aren’t used to the early hour.”,即可能是这些学生在生理上不习惯早起,故答案为B)。it may be…that是个强调句,强调成分为biologically。

17.What might be a reason for the hard transfer from middle school to high school?

短文中提到teenagers may need more sleep than they did at childhood后又提到all of this makes…transfer…more difficult,即从初中到高中要早起一个小时,这个转换有点困难,其原因是学生比以前需要更多的睡眠时间,故答案为C)。

18.What is the passage mainly about?

Passage Two

The report says the most popular subjects of study for international students in the United States last year were business and management.Twenty percent of all foreign students were studying those subjects.Fifteen percent studied engineering.Nineteen percent studied mathematics and computer science.

19.Which university had the second largest number of foreign students in America?

20.What can we learn about the State of California according to the latest report?

解析A)。选项中的it had the most…students,its students outnumbered…

21.What were the most popular subjects for the international students in the United States last year?

Passage Three

本短文四道题选项中的he,luggage,travels around the world和cheap tickets表明,短文是关于男士的情况,可能与去国外旅游有关

Brian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before the flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts,a jacket, two pairs of socks,a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small bag, which was very full, but he didn’t have any other luggage.Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter.Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.

“Give this package to Jean-Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it.I think you can find him easily,”Tony said.“You don’t have any luggage, right?”

“Only this bag,”Brian answered.“You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”

“That’s right.One carry-on bag is fine.Have a good trip.”

“Thanks.”

Is Brian a criminal? Not at all.He is an air courier. And he paid only$110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris.Air couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries.Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day.Often, the only way they can do this is to use an air-courier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air courier, but it is quick.

Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as air couriers. The number of tickets for courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year.However,air-courier travel isn’t for everyone. But if you have very little money, can be flexible about your travel plans, and don’t mind wearing the same clothes for a week,it can be a great way to take a vacation!

22.Why was Brian wearing so many clothes for his travel?

由短文中提到的“he was carrying one small bag, which was very full...”

23.What do we learn about an air courier’s job from the passage?

由短文中提到的“Air couriers…take important packages and papers to foreign countries.”

24.Why do businesses choose the air-courier service according to the passage?

解析C)。选项主语均为it以及选项中的costs less,flexible,saves time和grows fast表明,本题可能考查it的好处。由短文中提到的to use an air-courier company...is not cheap…but it is quick可知,空中信使公司提供的服务并不便宜,但是速度很快。

25.What is one of the disadvantages of travelling as an air courier?

解析D)。由选项主语均为he以及选项中的has to,cannot, saves little money和cannot decide均为表否定意义的词汇可知,本题可能考查男士工作中不好的一面。由短文中提到的but if you…can be flexible about your travel plans…it can be a great way to take a vacation可知,自己的旅行计划比较灵活,即能满足客户时间和地点的需要,在这个前提下,空中信使的工作对个人而言才是比较好的旅行方式。
