Listening Is More Important than Talking

Not a few people may take it for granted that talking is the most important part of communication. But the truth is,listening is more important than talking.Without listening carefully, you will fail to understand the message being conveyed to you,and thus you may not provide a substantial and meaningful response, which may lead to a breakdown in communication.

There are several reasons why listening ranks above talking in communication.First and foremost, listening gives us time to process what we’re hearing, and formulate considered responses.Secondly, listening enables us to pool collective wisdom and make wise decisions. For example, suppose you are discussing a particular issue in a meeting with several people, listen to what they say and you will be able to make an informed decision based on their well-rounded opinions.Last but not least, listening to others underscores listeners’respect for speakers.

Considering all the analysis above,we may safely come to the conclusion that successful two-way communication depends more on listening than on speaking.
