Passage One

Animals have different ways of protecting themselves against wintertime weather. Some animals grow heavy coats of fur or feathers, while others dig into the ground to find a warm wintertime home.

Some animals spend the winter in a deep sleep because by going to sleep they avoid the time of the year when food is scarce and the temperatures are low.Their sleep is known as hibernation.

There is much about hibernation that puzzles scientists. For example, they are wondering how hibernation came into being. Some scientists have explored the possibility that animals release a chemical that starts them hibernating.

One thing that scientists are certain about is that animals hibernate only when it is cold.Hibernation is a seasonal practice.

Some animals that fall into a wintertime sleep are not true hibernators because they spend only a part of the cold season asleep.Bears, for example, can easily be awakened from their winter nap. They are not true hibernators.

Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether a particular animal is a true hibernator. For example, some mice hibernate, but others do not.The same is true of bats. Some of them hibernate.Others do not.

Passage Two

It is physically impossible for a well-educated intellectual,or a brave man to make money the chief object of his thoughts;as physically impossible as it is for him to make his dinner the principal object of them. All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the main object of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money-ought to like it and to enjoy the satisfaction of winning it;but the main object of their lives is not money;it is something better than money.

A good soldier, for instance, mainly wishes to do his fighting well.He is glad of his pay-very properly so,and just complains when you keep him ten months without it;still, his main opinion of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them.

So of doctors. They like fees no doubt-ought to like them;yet if they are brave and well educated, the entire object of their lives is not fees. They would rather cure their patient and lose their fees than kill him and get it.And so with all other brave and rightly trained men;their work is first, their fees second, very important always, but still second.

1.The main idea of this passage is that____.

A.money matters more than work

B.money is not necessary at all

C.money is as important as work

D.money comes second to work in importance

2.The passage implies that healthy-minded people best enjoy____.

A.the happiness of accomplishing their work

B.ignores his pay

C.ought to enjoy his pay

D.doesn’t complain when kept without pay for months

4.Which of the following is the chief technique used by the author to support his argument?

A.Sharp contrast. B.Logical reasoning.

C.Detailed description D.Illustration with examples.

Passage Three

Beware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included,he can create a false impression.

For example, someone might say,“I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great.I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”

This guy’s a winner, right?Maybe, maybe not.We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!

He didn’t say anything that was false, but he deliberately omitted important information. That’s called a half-truth.Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic.Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying,“During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!”That’s true. However an honest statement would have been,“During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths.It’s against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast,“Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.”It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.

This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life:Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

1.Which statement is true according to the article?

A.Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying.

B.You can’t trust gamblers.

C.All governors help their states.

D.The truth can be used in dishonest ways.

2.The underlined word“deceive”in Paragraph 1 means____.

A.make money B.ignore warnings C.fool D.repair

3.The author clearly wants people to____.

A.think carefully about what they read and hear

B.wear mismatched socks during political campaigns

C.never trust anyone

D.vote for female candidates

4.The appropriate title for this selection would be____.

A.Natural Cat Food B.Everyone Lies

C.Lying With the Truth D.Nose Pimples

Passage Four

We are surrounded and attacked by so many sounds that attract the most attention.People in New York City seldom turn to look when a fire engine,a police car or an ambulance comes screaming along the street.

When I’m in New York,I’m a New Yorker.I don’t turn either.Like the natives.I hardly hear an alarm there.

At home in my little town in Connecticut,it’s different. The distant wail of a police car,an emergency vehicle or a fire siren brings me to my feet if I’m seated and brings me to the window if I’m in bed.

It’s the quietest sounds that have most effect on us,not the loudest. In the middle of the night,I can hear a dripping tap a hundred yards away through three closed doors.I’ve been hearing little creaking noises and sounds which my imagination turns into footsteps in the middle of the night for twenty-five years in our house. How come I never hear those sounds in the daytime?

I’m quite clear in my mind what the good sounds are and what the bad sounds are.

I’ve turned against whistling, for instance.I used to think of it as the mark of a happy worker but lately I’ve been associating the whistler with a nervous person making compulsive noises.

The tapping, tapping, tapping of my typewriter as the keys hit the paper is a lovely sound to me.I often like the sound of what I write better than the looks of it.

1.People in New York____.

A.don’t care about emergencies B.are used to alarms

C.are attracted by sounds D.don’t hear loud noises

2.How does the author relate to sounds at night?

A.He imagines sounds that do not exist.

B.He exaggerates quiet sounds.

C.He thinks taps should be turned off.

D.He believes it’s rather quiet at night.

3.What kind of sound does he find pleasant?

A.Tinkling sound of a coin dropping. B.Clinking sound of keys.

C.Tapping of his typewriter. D.Creaking sounds.

4.How does the writer feel about sounds in general?

A.They make him feel at home. B.He thinks they should be ignored.

C.He prefers silence to loud noises D.He believes they are part of our lives.

Passage Five

Some people think they have an answer to the troubles of automobile, crowding and dirty air in large cities.Their answer is the bicycle.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day.In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobile in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.

For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want city to draw the bicycle lanes on some of the main streets, because when bike riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents.Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea-they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.

The city government has not yet decided what to do.It wants to keep everyone happy.Only on weekends,Central Park is closed to cars, and roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.
