莫高窟第285窟为覆斗顶方形窟。洞窟正壁（西壁）三龛内塑善跏坐佛及二禅僧像，龛外绘诸天、菩萨、外道。两侧壁（南、北壁）各开四个禅窟。左壁（南壁）禅窟上绘“五百强盗成佛因缘故事画”、二佛并坐等内容。右壁（北壁）禅窟上绘七佛。前壁（东壁）绘三铺说法图。窟顶四披绘天空诸神。

该窟人物脸型清瘦，身材修长，褒衣博带，属典型的“秀骨清像”风格。洞窟右壁有西魏大统四、五年（公元538、539年）题记，是莫高窟有明确纪年题记最早的洞窟，也是最具代表性的西魏洞窟。
