敦煌石窟包括敦煌市莫高窟、西千佛洞，瓜州县榆林窟、东千佛洞，肃北县五个庙石窟。莫高窟是敦煌石窟的代表，现存洞窟共735个，彩塑2000多身，壁画45000余平方米，木构窟檐5座。

敦煌石窟是集建筑、彩塑、壁画于一体的综合艺术。石窟建筑形制因需求而定，彩塑是石窟艺术的主体，壁画表现复杂的场面和内容，三者交融辉映，相得益彰。

敦煌石窟艺术，是在传统汉晋艺术基础上吸收、融合外来艺术形成的具有中国风格的佛教艺术。它以佛教经典为依据，以现实生活为素材，用雕塑与绘画构成了一幅延续上千年、生动绚丽的社会生活画卷，被誉为“中世纪的百科全书”。

Dunhuang Grottoes include the Mogao Grottoes and the Western Thousand Buddha Caves in Dunhuang City，Yulin Grottoes and the Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves in Guazhou County and Wugemiao Grottoes in Subei County.As the representative of Dunhuang Grottoes，now Mogao Grottoes has 735 grottoes，more than 2,000 colored statues，murals of over 45,000 square meters and 5 cave eaves built with wood are contained.
