Sonnet 60

THEY that in course of heavenly spheares are skild,

To every planet point1 his sundry2 yeare:

In which her circles voyage is fulfild,

As Mars in three score yeares3 doth run his spheare

So since the wingéd God his planet cleare,

Began in me to move, one yeare is spent4:

The which doth longer unto me appeare,

Then, al those fourty which my life outwent5.

Then by that count, which lovers books invent,

The spheare of Cupid fourty yeares containes:

Which I haue wasted in long languishment,

That seemd the longer for my greater paines.

But let me loves fayre Planet short her wayes

This yeare ensuing6, or else short my dayes.

3.yeare:天体转一圈需要的时间。斯宾塞将火星沿自己的轨道绕一圈的周期定为60年,而不是正确的七十九年。理由可能是因为他写了六十首十四行诗后才追到心仪的女子。

4.spent:斯宾塞打趣地为爱神丘比特造了一个天体——恋人的身体。而且宣称这颗爱星已经运转了四十年。

5.outwent:穿过。1594年时斯宾塞四十岁。四十也让人联想到四旬斋。
