Sample 2 Seller insisting on payment by L/C

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter of March 10th requesting other terms of payment for your order No. 1234.

We have considered your proposals of other terms of payment. Since it’s the first time you make a purchase from us, we’d rather trade on customary terms. The world monetary market is rather unstable at the moment, so we can’t take chances though we’re certain that an enterprise of your standing will never default.

In addition, our shirts enjoy a good reputation in oversea markets, and the quick turnover will not only offset your L/C expenses, but also give you a satisfactory profit.

We would be grateful if you would follow our customary practice of payment.

Yours faithfully,

Notes:

1. customary: usual 惯常的

2. The terms of payment for every transaction should be agreed upon between the exporter and importer, so the two parties will try their best to ask for the terms of payment more favorable to themselves. The following structure is for your reference in writing a letter negotiating terms of payment.

Paragraph one: Express appreciation for the previous letter and indicate the intention of the letter; apologize for disagreement of the terms of payment the recipient put forward in the previous letter and state your suggestion.

Paragraph two: State the reasons for your disagreement and suggestion.

Paragraph three: Expect the recipient’s approval and an early reply.
