Part I Introduction

A résumé contains all the necessary information about you. The purpose of a résumé is to help you win an interview for a job. In order to capture your future employer’s interest in two minutes or less, you need to present all the appropriate background information about yourself in a greatly condensed, well-organized and attractive format. Before you write your résumé, take some time to know the position you apply for, the company and yourself. A good understanding will help you better present yourself.

Generally speaking, a résumé includes the following 8 parts. They are the heading, objective, education, work experience, awards, skills, interests and references.

In the heading part, it contains your name, current address, phone number and your e-mail address. This part allows the interviewers to reach you if they think you are qualified. In the objective section, state your job objective, the specific position you seek. The interviewers can immediately decide whether the job you want to find matches the one they offer. In the education section, list your degree, major, school and graduation date. The work experience section provides information about your employment history. For each experience, list your job title, company name, date of employment, main responsibilities. And all the information is formatted consistently. If you have won some awards, list them in the awards section. As for the skills and interests section, the items listed should be closely related to the job objective. Finally, a list of references may be included. List their names, addresses and phone numbers. Former employers and teachers are good possibilities.

Besides, you should know the language features of an effective résumé. You don’t have to use complete sentences in your résumé. Subjects are omitted. Verbal phrases or adjective phrases are used to describe your experience or qualifications. And parallel structures are used when you describe a group of activities you did.

By the way, no universal résumé works. The contents of your résumé depend on the job field and the corresponding qualifications needed. Therefore, you need to develop different résumés for slightly different job objectives.
