1.Application Letters求职信

In business communication the most common way to apply for a new job is to write an application letter to answer a recruitment1 advertisement,to seek a special interest. The letter provides the chance to show your own image and to create the first impression on the prospective employer.

The general plan of an application letter matches that of a sales letter fairly closely. When writing an application letter, the“prospect”to whom you are selling is the employer. The“product”you are selling consists of your knowledge, your skills, your personality—every thing about you will enable you to perform the job to the satisfaction of the employer. As a result, you must understand the employer's needs, know the specific requirements of the job you are seeking, and know what you have to“sell”.A good application letter should:

(1)Attract the reader's attention.

(2)Interest the reader in you as a prospective employee.Let your letter show that you have self-respect and self-confidence.Never appeal to an employer's sympathy.Show that you know something about the prospective employer's company.

(3)Make the reader want to hire you.Show that you have all the skills and other qualifications required to perform the job for which you are applying.Present your qualifications in relation to the requirements of the job.

(4)Lead to a personal interview.

Writing Suggestions

Opening:In the opening paragraph, state that you are applying for a particular job or for a specific type of work.If someone suggested that you apply for a job or you get the information from the advertisement, you should mention it.

Body: In the middle of your letter, you will need to elaborate on2 your opening and emphasize the highlights of your education and of your experience. If you have littleor no work experience, stress your educational qualifications.Mention any special scholastic achievements or honors;describe courses you have taken to prepare yourself for the particular kind of the job.If you have part-time work experience,be sure to mention it.Refer the reader to the enclosed resume3 for additional information. If you wish, indicate why you would like to work for the reader's company in particular.

Closing: In the closing part, request a personal interview.Make it easy for the reader to grant your request by stating the telephone number where you can be reached.

d.Apply for Scholarship

Dear Sirs,

I would like to apply for a British Council Scholarship to study in Britain.I am in my final year of a 5-year degree course in civil engineering10 at Munich University. In our last two years we have to choose an optional subject, and I have opted for town planning, with special reference to city centers. My working experience is limited to four months(July to September of last year and the year before),as an unpaid assistant in the planning office of the Munich City Council.

I am not involved in any current research, but my reading has included many articles and reports, several of which were from Great Britain and the USA,on traffic-free shopping centers. It is this particular aspect of town planning that interests me because the centers of many German towns suffer from the dense traffic there.Thereason I would like to study in Britain is to have the opportunity of working with those planners who are responsible for present and future developments in this area.

I understand that Leeds and Birmingham universities are heavily engaged in this work, and consequently,I hope that I would be able to do my post-graduate work in one of these. As for the period,at least one year would suit me,starting next autumn or at any time after that.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

e.A Covering Letter11with an Application Form

Dear Ms.Ridley,

Thank you for sending me an application form which I now enclose, together with my curriculum vitae.

If my application were successful,I should like to return to Africa to fulfill a personal ambition.I wish to become involved in the establishment of craft training work shops and community care centers.I feel strongly that local personnel must be trained who will eventually be able to administer the projects.

I feel I am well qualified to carry out such a program for the following reasons:

1.As a business woman who has worked in many capacities in a highly competitive field,my experience would be invaluable in fund-raising and in the development of community projects.

2.My particular interest is in helping the adolescent to acquire useful skills.Through local community work,I am well aware of the adolescent's problems and difficulties.

3.By living and working in the community,I would be able to help in the development of trades and crafts, which would eventually produce profits to be re-invested in the local community.

I am looking forward to your good news.

Yours sincerely,
