2.Kinds of Sentences句子类型

By combining the various sentence elements—words,phrases,and clauses—different kinds of sentences can be formed.These sentences,defined according to gramma tical structure,are simple sentences,compound sentences,complex sentences,and compound-complex sentences.

将句子的基本成分,如词、词组和从句等组合在一起,就构成了不同的句子类型。根据语法结构,句子又可以分为简单句、并列句、复杂句及并列复杂句。Simple Sentences简单句

A simple sentence contains one independent clause.It can contain as few as two words,or it can contain many words.

简单句是不依附于其他结构而独立存在的分句。它最少可能是两个词,也可能是多个词。

Study the following sentences:

Secretaries type.

Secretaries in our company type many reports and take dictation for long periods of time.

Ms.Johann or Mr.Kelley prepared the requisition and sent it to Dr.Wiley.(This simple sentence has a compound subject and a compound predicate.)

Compound Sentences并列句

A compound sentence has two or more independent,or main,clauses.

两个或两个以上的独立分句(简单句)由并列连词或其他并列手段连接起来便构成并列句。

Study the following sentences:

Secretaries type many reports,and they take dictation for long periods of time.

The proposed budget has been submitted to the general manager,but it has not been ap-proved yet.

This year the meeting will be in San Francisco;next year it will be in Chicago.

Complex Sentences复杂句

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.

独立分句加从属分句(从句)便构成了复杂句,或称复合句。

Study the following sentences in which the dependent clauses appear in italics:

Secretaries who are employed in our company type many reports.

I believe that you have all the necessary qualifications.

When I asked Mr.Sullivan,he was unable to tell me what the total cost would be.

Compound-complex Sentences并列复杂句

A compound-complex sentence contains two or more independent clauses plus one or more dependent clauses.

两个或两个以上的句子由并列连词连接起来,如果其中至少有一个是复杂句,便构成并列复杂句。

Study the following sentences in which the dependent clauses appear in italics:

Secretaries who work in our company type many reports,but they also take dictation for long periods of time.

We wanted to visit you while we were in Omaha,but your secretary said that you were away on a business trip.

Two versions of the story are being circulated,and no one seems to know which of them is accurate.
