a.The imperative mood of a verb indicates a command or a request.

表示命令或请求,通常用动词的祈使式。

Dispatch the order as soon as possible.

Please sign both copies of the enclosed contract,keep the carbon copy for your files,and return the original copy to me for our records.

b.The indicative mood of a verb is used for a statement or a question.

表示客观事实或提问,通常用动词的直陈式。

Your order,which arrived yesterday,will be shipped next Monday.

Have you answered the letter from Dr.Finch?

c.The subjunctive mood of a verb indicates a condition contrary to fact,a wish,or a doubt.The need to use a verb in the subjunctive mood is often signaled by I wish,if,as if,as though,or a similar expression.

表示与事实相反的事实愿望、疑问,通常用动词虚拟式。在I wish,if,as if,as though等结构后常用动词的过去式或过去完成时构成虚拟语气。

Sometimes I wish I were CEO of Oracle.

If it were not snowing now,I would drive out for my business trip.

Miss Jenkins acts as if she were Queen of England.

Note that a subjunctive mood is used in the dependent clause of a sentence when the main clause contains a verb such as request,suggest,recommend,move,or require.Be especially careful to use the verb form be in such sentences.

注意当主句中包含建议、请求、命令等意义的动词时,从句中通常用动词原形be构成虚拟语气。

Some companies require that all orders be filled within 24 hours.

We suggest that Maria be the one to notify them.

George recommended that Sara audit the accounts.

I move that the meeting be adjourned.
